@jmagpin,
of all the B vitamins, the injected form of B1 has the potential for anaphylactic shock--I have severe allergies, and have had anaphylactic shock with other things, so an not willing to go for the shots (and am sure my Dr would also say no).
I use B1 capsules, and keep them under my tongue, like a lozenge. Not the best taste and sensation, but B1 is very hard to absorb.
I am going to try Benfotiamine, a synthetic form of B1 that is absorbed better, and apparently works better (and of course, is more expensive 8O )

And yes, don't use Cyanocobalamin injection for several reasons:
!)the methyl form is the form our body makes (from the cyano) that is so beneficial to nerves
and 2) the injectible cyanocobalamin uses aluminum in its production--check the insert, it is listed as one of ingredients.
My Dr gives me script for needles and for the methyl B12--I inject myself (very easy, you get used to it).

Dr Klenner was working in the 1940's--they did not produce methyl form then, this is very recent. Likewise, Benfotiamine very recent to US.

Shye,

Thanks for the info. I just started using a Naturopath about 2-months ago and she has been doing the B12 shots for me. I will ask her about the B1. I appreciate the comments regarding the anaphylactic shock issue. That is good to know. I will check out the capsules. Thanks

I am trying to figure out why I am high on folate. is it that I have a bacterial infection and bacteria has folate or is my body not using folate the way it is supposed to. anyone else high on folate?

i was high once when i changed my b complex.. i had a 'phantom itch' because of it and once i went back to a b complex with less B9 the itch vanished (whew!)
not sure why you would be high, without knowing anything about your daily intakes of things..

test?

How do you know you're high ? What type of test did you have done? Are there anygood tests that test all major vitamin levels?

it was a test for RBC folate. my lab had a range 776-1780 (which i did not know at the time, means squat), on jan 27/06 i was fine and the level was 1480. when i was itchy it was 2170.

so my b12 was 300 and my serum folate was >24. weird I was not suplmenting folic acid but if folate is high it can artificially raise the b12 is that correct. so really it would make sense. what is the intrinsic factor really? and how do we loose it?

lol selma i answered as if your question was for me WHOOPS hahaha
serum folate >24... my serum folate when the RBC folate was 2170, was 36.7..but i don't have units :( do you have units for your greater than 24, tara? b12 at 300.. what units was that in?

Interestingly, I was recently looking back on my sons blood tests when he was presumably suffering an acute porphyria attack in 2002.
He had neurological problems.
The only raised levels in the tests were in his serum folate 33.6, and he was weakly positive for celiac also.
He was 6 yrs old and did not take any supplements.
He also had a mild rash on his face.

no I do not know the units but this is my next focus. I simply asked why is this high and they said "oh they put folate fortification in everything" and I said "oh so its not cuz its not being used up for the job its supposed to be doing?"
Now I am just realizing that we make folate with our flora so why wouldnt our loss of pH balence result in an imbalence of these bacteria especially H-pylori and C jejuni. I am not entirly convinced they are not supposed to be there in the 1st place just not in runaway quantities. like a fish tank with algea our kidneys should keep the pH at 7 if not then I would say that bacteria could gwt all over as well as the fungi infections on our feet. our bodys should pull up calcium with our D and nutralized this as well who knows. it is an acid. folic acid. I just dont know why we have to piece this crap together. I really sense a conspiracy to keep us sick. immagine how cheap healthcare would be if we truly understood the nutritional role in these diseases rather than some stupid theory on my immune system randomly forgeting how to read foreign protiens and attacking me instead. the theory is too linear with a body with many many cyclical revolutions and a ping pong between macro and micro biology. even porphyria is incredibly complicated. these things dont just happen.

Niacin flush - how often is too often?

Does anyone know if there is a 'too often' warning on high dose Niacin (100mg) ? I know that the 'flushing' by it's very nature means it's an overdose but I'm wondering how often others do this?

For me the flush seems beneficial - I feel 'looser' in the body afterwards, it relaxes my muscles and I feel more alert. Some weeks I'd like to do it every day but just not sure if that is moving me into the liver-damage category.

niacin

I've been taking niacin for several years now. I started at 500 mg per day, upped it to 1000 at some point and have taken 1500 for the last 8 months. I have never noticed any side effects other than the occasional flush but after reading your post, I did a little research and will probably cut back to 500 mg a day. (I enjoy the flush when it happens).

My research led me to wonder if too much niacin increases my level of uric acid (a potential side effect according to one source). Since I take daily medication to control my uric acid, it seems prudent to cut back on the niacin.

By the way, my doctor okayed the 500 mg per day, but I didn't think to mention it to her when I increased it.

ww, i haven't niacin flushed in over a year now so i have not done research on overdose. there must be some sort of review study out there to give a sense of a daily max. can't go hunting just now though :( sry!

emess, this is interesting - how high is your uric acid level when you don't take meds to control it? what level is it at when you take the medicine?

average uric acid levels in ms patients are usually in the neighbourhood of 194 umol/L. (160s in relapse, 230s in remission.. healthy controls more like 290-300)

I've never had my levels tested but I'm fighting a running battle with gout. Acute attacks of gout are painful beyond belief and cause my feet and legs to jump in the air, once even pulling me out of bed. I can't walk but I stand to transfer and a gout attack makes that almost impossible. Finally, I started taking 0.6 mg colchicine daily to prevent attacks. Occasionally, one will still begin, then I double the colchicine.

My father had gout but there is no history of MS in my family.
