YEP!

LOOKS LIKE THOSE "sunflower seeds" are a TOTAL waste when it comes to TOCOTRIENOLS.

I think some types of CORN may have lots of TOCOTRIENOLS. I wonder if they are retained after cooking?

just from wikipedia:

"The current commercial sources of tocotrienol are rice, palm, and annatto.[11] The ratio of tocopherol-to-tocotrienol in rice, palm, and annatto is 50:50, 25:75, and 0.1:99.9, respectively.
α-tocopherol makes up roughly 25–50% of palm and rice vitamin E mixtures, respectively, and has been shown to interfere with tocotrienol benefits. Annatto, on the other hand, naturally contains only δ- and γ-tocotrienols and is essentially tocopherol-free, hence not confined by α-tocopherol interference issues.
Other natural tocotrienol sources include rice bran oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, barley, and wheat germ.[12] Sunflower, peanut, walnut, sesame, and olive oils, however contain only tocopherols.[13] "

My doctor who is a Cardiologist is very interested in the possible "cardiovascular health" benefits of TOCOTRIENOLS.

Tocotrienols and cardiovascular health.

Abstract
This review emphasizes the effects of tocotrienols on the risk factors for atherosclerosis, plaque instability and thrombogenesis, and compares these effects with tocopherol.

Tocotrienols reduce serum lipids and raise serum HDL-C. Alpha-tocopherol, on the other hand, has no effect on serum lipids.

Tocotrienols have greater antioxidant activity than tocopherols. Both reduce the serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and advanced glycation end products, and expression of cell adhesion molecules. The CRP-lowering effects of tocotrienols are greater than tocopherol.

Tocotrienols reduce inflammatory mediators, δ-tocotrienol being more potent, followed by γ- and α-tocotrienol.

Tocotrienols are antithrombotic and suppress the expression of matrix metalloproteinases. They suppress, regress and slow the progression of atherosclerosis, while tocopherol only suppresses, and has no effect on regression and slowing of progression of atherosclerosis.

Tocotrienol reduces risk factors for destabilization of atherosclerotic plaques. There are no firm data to suggest that tocotrienols are effective in reducing the risk of cardiac events in established ischemic heart disease. Alpha-tocopherol is effective in primary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD), but has no conclusive evidence that it has beneficial effects in patients with established ischemic heart disease.

Tocotrienols are effective in reducing ischemia-reperfusion cardiac injury in experimental animals and has the potential to be used in patients undergoing angioplasty, stent implantation and aorto-coronary bypass surgery.

In conclusion, experimental data suggest that tocotrienols have a potential for cardiovascular health, but long-term randomized clinical trials are needed to establish their efficacy in primary and secondary prevention of CAD.

My OTHER intrests in TOCOTRIENOLS is that they lower MMP-9s which is GREAT for MS folks and they help block the spread of CANCER to nearby tissues.

Abstract
Natural vitamin E is a mixture of two classes of compounds, tocopherols and tocotrienols. Recent research has revealed that tocotrienols, especially gamma-tocotrienol, exhibit not only the same antioxidant ability as tocopherols, but also remarkable anticancer capacity in cancer cell lines.

In this study, the invasion and metastatic capacities of gastric adenocarcinoma SGC-7901 cells and the correlation with antimetastasis mechanisms induced by gamma-tocotrienol were explored.

The results showed the inhibitory effects of gamma-tocotrienol at doses of 15, 30, 45 and 60 mumol/L for 48 h on cell migration and cell matrigel invasion; activities of matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) increased in SGC-7901 cells when compared to the control group (P<.05 or P<.01). An increasing trend in the chemotactic responses to fibronectin (FN) in SGC-7901 cells was found in the gamma-tocotrienol treatments. SGC-7901 cell attachment decreased in the gamma-tocotrienol-treated groups in comparison with the control group (P<.01).

The mRNA expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 showed that gamma-tocotrienol significantly reduced the matrigel invasion capability through down-regulation of the mRNA expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 (P<.01), and up-regulation of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and TIMP-2 in SGC-7901 cells by treatment with gamma-tocotrienol for 48 h (P<.05). gamma-Tocotrienol also significantly increased the mRNA expression of nm23-H1 in SGC-7901 cells (P<.01).

These findings suggest a potential mechanism of gamma-tocotrienol-mediated antitumor metastasis activity and indicate the role of vitamin E as potential chemopreventative agents against gastric cancer.

recalling this related post from jan 2010 (re rats, unfortunately, but nonetheless...)

http://www.thisisms.com/forum/natural-a ... tml#p87026

specifically,
Expression of both MMP 2, 9, and 13 was significantly higher, and expression of Ki67 was significantly reduced in the zinc deficient group both mesenterial and antimesenterial.
wheat germ is one option that contains both zinc and tocotrienols... i rarely if ever eat wheat germ, but good to know...
