Myelin Sheath Support product...any thoughts?

Hi guys,

I'm so happy to be here, and to already feel so welcomed. I will share more of the research I have done on my own as time goes on. I want to learn, and also help others who have chosen the natural route for healing/managing our MS. I was diagnosed in July of 2011, and the only "unnatural" thing I've done was the 12 to 16 day prednisone oral treatment, since my neurologist felt I should try it, and since it's only a $4 generic at Target pharmacy. I've been on it three times since September of last year (Sept, Jan 2012, and just recently in May), and each time it has been less effective, since the MS seems to be progressing with me.

Up until Feb of 2012, I only was experiencing MS in my legs as lack of balance, weakness, and stiffness, which has gotten worse over time, despite exercise and big dietary changes. I've also had numbness in my feet, since the beginning. Then in Feb of this year, the numbness and tingling spread to my hands and fingers. Now my motor skills in my fingers is not what it used to be. I struggle to write coherently, and have trouble buttoning buttons, and turning on slide type light switches. I have been using a supplement called Nerve Fix since January, but have not noticed any true benefit from it yet.

I just made a new friend who ran a health food store for 20 plus years, and she made some recommendations, which seem good. She told me about one supplement I had never heard of called Myelin Sheath Support, by Plantary Herbals. My friend said it's not going to "fix" anything of course, but that it had good ingredients to support the myelin sheaths.

I was thinking of trying it, but wanted to see if anyone here had tried it yet. Swanson seems to have it for a good price. I'll probably order some next week, as I just spent on supplements a few days ago.

Love and Healing,
Aly

Hi Aly,
We are glad to have you join in and contribute your experiences. Although you did not ask any specific questions, please accept my comments with my good intentions. I have unique ideas that are not part of conventional medicine. I know that most of us have taken oral prednisone or even IV Solu-Medrol; but I wonder if it is a good idea – people who had taken glucocorticosteroids frequently or long-term go on to develop diabetes VERY often. These drugs are known to raise blood sugar levels. I recently found an article that linked steroids with insulin resistance (which is marked by excess insulin) and fatty liver disease (a.k.a. hepatic steatosis). If your neurologist prescribed the medication again, you might discuss this possible side effect with him, especially if you have found them progressively less effective. Perhaps he would order a fasting serum insulin test.

I have never tried the Myelin Sheath Support that was recommended to you; MY philosophy is "What do I have to lose?" especially if it will do no harm; sometimes I wonder if MS is a neurological disease at all – I am starting to think MS should be in the jurisdiction of endocrinology. Thank you for allowing me to air my unconventional ideas.

Hi Lynda,

I just wanted to thank you for your response, and for the encouraging words. And know that I agree with you completely about the prednisone. The fact that it didn't even really work this past time, I take as a sign to not even use it again.

To Healing,
Aly
