Zinc/copper balance

Hi everyone,

I was taking a zinc supplement for some time until I noticed that my copper levels were getting on the low side. The zinc supplement was 15mg zinc picolinate daily, and I started adding 2mg copper picolinate daily, which I thought was the recommended amount for the 15mg zinc.

After I started doing this, my copper went up a little again (from 75 mcg/dL to somewhere in the 80's), but unfortunately my zinc levels also dropped considerably (from around 120 mcg/dL to 85 mcg/dL).

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Is the 15/2 ratio not the right one? Are there strategies to assure that both copper and zinc are absorbed well?

Thanks,
brm

it's 50:2 that should work much better. great work getting the zinc to 120!

Thanks for the quick response!

Is the 50/2 ratio just the ratio, or would you suggest taking 50mg zinc and 2mg copper daily?

Do you have advice regarding the timing? Should the zinc and copper be taken together or apart (e.g. zinc in the morning and copper in the evening)?

Cheers,
brm

hi, you were taking 15 and 2, it should be 50 and 2. matches distribution in food better.
the serum ratio for zinc copper should be 1.1 (1.1:1)

zinc is naturally highest in the am, but do take with food. copper at the same time should be fine.

do you have good zinc- and copper-rich foods in your diet? for a foundation?

I'm pretty sure that JL meant mg and not a ratio.

there's an optimal ratio for balancing intake, and another ratio altogether for serum.. 15mg supplemental zinc is not enough to balance 2mg supplemental copper.

look at this.

15 to 2! i had forgotten about this (because it's off..)
i have a huge crush on this company but some of their stuff makes NO SENSE to me :S
would be nice to know how and why they decided on these amounts.
and also would be interesting to see bloodwork on whoever takes this for a long time.

luckily there are plenty of products using 50 and 2!!

Mid 2017 my Zn & Cu labs were:

Zinc ----- 75 ug/dL_____60 - 120 ug/dL

Copper
--- 96 ug/dL______70 - 140 ug/dL

Could this be causing my Mg resistance :?:

What other problems might this be causing :?:

Or, no problem :?:

interesting/crazy, these results buck some of the trends.

Evaluation of Serum Magnesium, Iron, Copper and Zinc Levels in Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients and Healthy Controls
http://jcbr.goums.ac.ir/article-1-120-en.pdf

yes copper is higher in patients than controls, but so is zinc. and those copper zinc ratios are nuts. bad in patients and *worse* in controls. magnesium in patients is bad, but among controls it's better in males and worse in females. those are the weirdnesses that stand out at first glance. i had to check full text of the results section to see if something was backwards. as far as i can tell though, no. so strange!

i don't know what i think of the discussion, the explanation of these results in relation to other studies. don't have time for further digging, for one thing since it's about stroke and not ms, and for another because i am supposed to be working on something else!!!
