How to get continuous supply of Roxithromycin in Australia

This post is on behalf of my friend Penny in Western Australia who was diagnosed with 2pms 8 yrs ago & is trying to stay on Dr Wheldon’s antibiotic program.

Her GP - who is very willing and can continue to supply Doxycycline - is being prevented from supplying more than one script of Roxithromycin which leaves Penny unable to continue the program.

Her Neurologist has been totally unhelpful.

Has anyone else in Australia had this problem, and if so, how did you get round it please?

Thank you.

Its been a few years since I tried the ABX regime, but I do not remember my doctor having any problems providing me with a prescription with repeats. This was a few years back, and in NSW. I also do not remember any raised eyebrows at the chemist either.

Well, she can just take doxycycline by itself for now: I did for a month at first. The reason for the two bacteristatics is to avoid resistance but it is very hard to develop resistance with doxycycline: people with acne take it by itself for years.

Whilst neurologists are totally unhelpful by and large, (my neurologist would have preferred me to end up in a nursing home whilst I was still a young person), I am surprised at a GP behaving this way. Well, maybe not: mine was forever asking me if I still needed roxithromycin because it was comparatively expensive. In the end I took to buying it myself online. The cost was only about a pound a day: hardly bank breaking!

I live in Western Australia, and the GP I went to read all the info I provided him with about the treatment, and then wrote prescriptions for Minocycline (5 rpts) , Roxithhromycin (5 rpts) and Tinidazole (5 rpts). He kept a copy of the treatment schedule illustrating the length of time the abx's had to be taken for, & did not express concern on this.
However, a fellow MSer has been to three GP's so far, and all of them have refused to write her scripts, saying they have never heard of the treatment & do not feel comortable with it.... (they obviously don't watch Catalyst).
I guess it just depends on how informed the GP is that you go to, and just have to find one who is up-to-date.

Maybe her doctor would feel happier with it with a bit more medical information. You could print out this pdf, written by David.

Then if more is needed if one of you gives me an email address I can send some papers.........................Sarah

So the GP is willing, but maybe I misunderstood. Is the GP prevented from including repeats on the script? or is it OK to place repeats, but not a second script (with repeats)?

And exactly who is "preventing" the GP?

ORRRR... Maybe you mean the GP is prevented from providing the future scripts on PBS (ie Gvt Funding)? Most chemists go into auto pilot, and simply charge me the subsidised cost...

I get all my non MS meds, that I take for MS (ie "off label use") without the PBS check box ticked on the script. The GP should have no restriction on this (for these abx's) if they are willing.

Many thanks for all your responses. Really appreciated. Penny's GP is very open to this treatment and positive about it, but her supply problem may have something to do with price. I'll pass on the info everyone has sent. I did print off the pdf of the overview & treatment schedule on Dr Wheldon's website and Penny took this to both her GP and her Neurologist.

Hi

My gp has to get an arthorisation from medicare to prescribe a months worth of doxy and roxithromycin. he gives the reason as cronic infection. maybe sugest the gp try that. someone on CPn Help did say that they get a private prescripion from their gp and get a large amount all at one time but they have to pay more for the antibiotics but save as they don't have to pay for gp visits as often. they wee in Victoria i think.

hope this helps
