seriously.

from "Top 10 HR Best Practices"

"10. Delight Employees with the Unexpected
The last but not least way is to occasionally delight your employees with unexpected things that may come in the form of a reward, a gift or a well-done certificate. Reward not only the top performers but also a few others who are in need of motivation to exhibit their potential."

my employer decided to delight us with cutting our summer contract. THANKS. that was special. the hundreds you'll save will go a long way towards making up your tens of thousands of dollars budget overrun.

"A cost overrun, also known as a cost increase or budget overrun, is an unexpected cost incurred in excess of a budgeted amount due to an under-estimation of the actual cost during budgeting".

way to make the litte guy pay for your screw-up.

JL,

So sorry to hear the bad news!

Does this mean a cut in hours or off for the summer?

thanks maynaka. it means severe reduction in hours in august, and we're not loaded with hours to begin with, by any stretch. we have july to fight off that management decision, hopefully we can :S

with this job i'm always a short step away from eviction. fun times!

Good luck with management!

May I be so bold as to suggest you consider something in nutrition?

Your knowledge in this area is unsurpassed. Think about how many people just on this site who look to you for advice and guidance?

I know several people have suggested a book, but maybe writing articles or a question/answer type column. Lord knows, there are at least a hundred people on this site who'd be willing to submit questions.

Just think about it.

JL,

Sorry to hear about your employment struggles.

FWIW, I agree with maynaka - you are so knowledgeable in the area of nutrition! Ever considered a mail order vitamin/nutritional supplement business? I order many things from an online store in Calgary - much cheaper than out of a store, but then again your expertise would be lost that way...?!?

Seriously though, I've been in a few health food stores recently, stocking up on a few items based on Dr's. Hubbard, Embry & Code's suggested supplements (specifically Dr. Code's pre & post procedure list). Many times I have been tempted to sit down & ask you for some guidance in this department..... If it was a service I could pay for, I wouldn't feel like such a pest!

I truly wish you the best,
D

d,

That is an excellent idea.

If it's mail order the items could be dropped shipped so no inventory is needed. Your opinion on the better supplements would also be helpful. I also, would pay a fee for your expertise.

JL you could even do this part time until it provides enough income. This could be the beginning of an empire!

:D

the best thing for people with ms or anyone is to have a job with medical benifits so you are looked after financially when you can't do it on your own unfortunately we don't consider that when were young

thanks you both for the support, it means alot.

i feel conflicted about accepting money for this knowledge, since i don't have formal nutrition training.

people have been telling me i would end up in health care for decades. maybe it's time to listen :S

i'd be sad to transition working for the environment but i guess people are part of it after all.. that was the origin of my whole approach ... literally, ecosystem restoration on the scale of the human body.

maybe if i did a masters in applied health science then i would feel better about it. it's something i've thought about before but i'm reallllly sick of going back to school and it not working out :(

PLUS, in terms of working online, i can't order lab work, or make people's doctors order lab work, and that's a pretty fundamental part of the process. you have to measure your indicators.

not sure what you mean, maynaka, by dropped shipped? oh i looked it up. interesting idea. i'd have to look up how people charge for online consultation.

i just need to figure out some way to properly put a roof over my head.

so far this year rent has eaten 80% of my take-home income. unbelievable.

JL,

People could order their own lab work and email you the results for your review and recommendations.

Setting up a Paypal account is the way to go. People could then pay via Visa/Mastercard/etc.

The consultation could be instant chat, email and maybe eventually through Skype.

Sorry, all these ideas are just off the top of my head. But you have the computer and nutrition knowledge to pull this off.

You could also keep working and supplement your income until it takes off.

I could appreciate not wanting to go back to school. I finished my Masters and a year later when on disability. A formal degree in Nutrition would be nice but you always have substantiated your recommendations with medical research.

The US has the SBA (small business administration) which offers advice, loans, etc. for people starting small viable businesses. Is there such a thing in your area?

If you were sitting next to me now I would say "Woman, this is an idea to give some thought to!" I talk that way to my girlfriends (actually, I would probably add a few more colorful phrases).

Is all rent that high?

I was going to add some emoticons but they always end up on the bottom of the page.

Anyway, something more to think about.

thanks for that input robbie, i didn't have it on screen when i wrote my last post.

benefits would be dreamy but there's not even a whisper of a hope on that score, with my current employer. boo.

@ maynaka - i don't have any resources to put into business start-up unfortunately. but it's something to keep in mind once i get something more reliable for a 9 to 5.

i have had lots of thought about moving but it always ends up being a saw-off when i consider everything :S

oh well! thanks :)
