Hey guys/gals,

I was wonder if any of you have had any type of pain in your jugular area?
I have not been diagnosis, but have similar symptoms of MS for the last 2 years. I am just curious if anyone has experience something similar.

Thanks,
Lauren

Yes! I've been to the doctor about pain/fullness/throbbing in my right jugular (or carotid artery? I'm unsure of the anatomy) region several times since before I was diagnosed with MS. I've always been fobbed off with 'it's stress/glands/nothing' etc.

I mentioned the feeling in my neck to my neuro the other week, in relation to CCSVI, and he countered with 'the veins that are supposed to be involved in CCSVI are deep in the neck and you wouldn't feel them'...but since then I've read something about CCSVI which mentioned cases where the external arteries/veins press on the internal jugular veins and cause stenosis. So I'm thinking maybe I have a problem with my external vein which causes the CCSVI on my internal ones?

When my neck is painful it also causes my ear to feel full. If I press on the right side of my neck at any time it makes a noise in my ear.

I get pain in the area just below my ears where my jaw joins my skull. I have this pain when my headaches hit. So I have all at the same time :

fierce headaches
terrible TMJ pain
pain below my ears and all the way around the base of my skull
pain down my neck and my upper back to my shoulder blades
terrible fatigue

I have no idea if my jugular veins have anything to do with this but I also often wonder about it.

I admit that never perceived pain in my left internal jugular vein just above my chest. However at the doppler exam they pushed on the problem area and asked me if I had pain there...this should illustrate that they may have expected it. And afterwards had pain, but I guess because they had pushed on it...

To be frank, I would however think that pain behind the neck is not necessarily directly related to a stenosis at the point of pain in the neck. But am not an expert...

this could be from a rotated atlas--this was my case for YEARS--until recently went a chiropractor to adjust the atlas, C1--end of all those pains!!
this video explains it well

(you don't have to use the machine, a good chiro can adjust it)

I've had pain/soreness on my left side of my neck since the onset of my symptoms last year. I had initially thought I had injured my neck, but docs scoffed it off, reassuring me it had nothing to do with my symptoms. I wasn't even aware that our jugular's are on our left side until last October. Now I'm convinced there is a direct correlation and can't wait to get fixed!!! come on Buffalo!!!

Hi Jen, we actually have 4 jugular veins: 2 left 2 right (one internal and one external on each side). If you have pain on left could be left internal jugular - would be curious, is very common it seems. My valve problem is however not in neck but lower close to chest bone at the junction of the jugular with the so-called brachiocephalic vein going to heart. I think Zamboni's wife had a similar upper chest location of stenosis.

Best you get a doppler at Buffalo when they open doors mid Feb on doppler exams to check it out. I think you could even participate in a doppler/MRV trial with Zivadinov, think to have heard they still accept applicants for a follow-up study...best you ask at Buffalo.

I don't think they do interventions yet, but you'll find s.o...

I too have pain in my neck and have been diagnosed by MRI as having degenerated discs in my cervical spine. I have not been given an MS diagnosis but have many of the symptoms of MS, fatigue, dizzyness, falling, slurred speach, shaking legs and arms. When I heard about this CCVI and MS is why I joined this site. At first I was hopeful but have been overwhelmed with all the info. Dissapointed at the prospects of finding out what is wrong with me with the lack of knowledge and understanding by the medical community.

Is it possible to have CCVI cause my symtoms without having MS?

Hi Kerry, I'm really sorry for your symptoms. The reason for those can however also have other roots, but do not understand precisely what they mean with "degenerated discs" ? Means the discs are squeezing a spinal cord nerve? This could well cause your symptoms! And it might be possible to have an intervention to repair that with a specialist. It seems they did not inform you what these "degenerated disc" diagnosis means. I would really try to ask + also ask what could be done.

Did they do you an MRI of brain and spinal cord? The MRI is really a key indicator to find MS. In case they did and did not find any myelin damage, it would rather mean no MS. In case they havn't done brain and spinal cord, just to get it out of your head (since you seem to have doubts and came to this forum), you could do the MRI you have not done yet - just to exclude.

And just FYI, the CCSVI as such is a blockage of jugular/azygos veins (from brain to heart, so the veins from brain/neck to chest area), it has nothing directly to do with a cervical spine issue.

Hope understood your question right. And that you will soon get more information on your diagnosis so that they can treat you soon to reduce your symptoms!

Best wishes

Steffi
