Bank Transfers to Poland?

Anybody else had any troubles with bank transfers to Poland?
My brother is booked to see Dr. Kostecki at the end of June and we are supposed to send money for hotels, transfers, and testing before we leave by a bank transfer. The Royal Bank of Canada told me that they could not transfer the money in Zloty's (PLN) and that it would have to be first converted into USD, sent to Poland, and converted to PLN. Not to mention the rate they told me is 0.37 when the Bank of Canada rate is 0.3239! This makes it quite a bit more expensive for me!
Has anybody else had any troubles with this? Does anyone know a more cost effective way to do it, or a way to get the bank to gave me even a decent exchange rate on the transfer?
