Is IBT making me fat?

I have been sleeping inclined since Dec. I have had many positive effects from it, the first one being that I can sleep thru the whole night without having to go to the bathroom.
BUT I have gained weight, going from a size 8 to a tight size 12. I have never been this big in my life. I am rolly polly and it is uncomfortable.

My diet is good, although I have pigged out for the last year or so. (Since I am now able to eat wheat  ) I have really watched it for the last month or so and haven't dropped a pound. (I don't know how much I weigh since I cannot stand on the scale without holding onto something)

I love my IBT but is it making me HUGE TOM?

Just a thought but..I think that when a person is not getting enough sleep or enough quality sleep that it mucks up their metabolism.. now that you are getting some good rest your body might not be burning as many calories..

I agree with getting your thyroid checked.

I've gained a bit since starting the IBT, and i never gain--I also get my thyroid checked often, just checked, is okay.
Hadn't thought to attribute it to the IBT--do know I am changing my eating purposely, trying to become vegetarian, can't eat grains, so eating lots of nuts--thought it was that. But who knows?

My husband started IBT January 1st and has experienced some very positive improvements.

I have noticed that his appetite has greatly improved. He was never hungry before but now is often asking me if I'm hungry. So for sure he is eating much more. He hasn't gained weight as he exercises as much as he can during the day.

It's almost as if his taste buds and grumbling stomach are now working .

now that u guys mention it, my appetite at first sky rocketed. It has definitely leveled out. My blood sugar is sooo much better. I would crash prob around 5 times a day but now I am only crashing if I experience a strong emotion.

I have started watching what I eat and try to do my bike as much as poss. I am soo used to being too thin that I am shocked when I look in the mirror. (also husband is making snide remarks)

I have been on such extreme diets in the past to help my ms , one for losing weight will be a snap. I think. I have not played this game before. But the way I look at it, is that this is NORMAL. Overall I eat much less now than when I was 109lbs.

Now to go to bed AND SLEEP THE WHOLE NIGHT THRU...AAAAA

Ha ha, yes, I know this problem....it is called middle age. I have also gone from an 8 to a 12 in less than 2 years...don't have MS or do IBT. I am not eating more...perhaps doing less physically, but my mother always warned me about this and she was right!! I heard it's impossible to lose after menopause....well not easy anyhow.
It's very depressing.

Shye,
I have been vegetarian for decades. I suggest that since you cannot eat grain, you might look into buckwheat, which is a not a grain, but a seed. It is very nutritious. I do not care for it toasted, as it is for Kasha, but one can purchase untoasted buckwhat groats at natural food stores. It is DELICIOUS!! It is cooked as a grain is, 2 to 1. It cooks quickly (about 20 min). There is also a product Cream of Buckwhat made by Pocono, which cooks in about the same time as cream of wheat.

Increased muscle density and bone density on IBT

Interesting thread. Thanks KC

This may be of use to help you understand a few possibilities.

Muscle and bone density.

Muscle and bone weigh more than fat. Both have been shown to improve in conditions including spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy and many more have reported increased strength, being able to exercise more, all of which requires the body to take on more fuel.

The taste buds also appear to be stimulated, particularly in the elederly. This would undoubtedly make food more enjoyable and lead to an increased consumption. This was also the case for people with ms.
In some elderly people the taste of food over time renders everything to taste near enough the same and must be the most depressing part of getting older so this should not be considered as a negative, just a change that needs compensating for.

My friend and I who are of heavy build being over 6 foot tall found we had gained a full stone and yet our colthes appeared to br loose fitting, more loose in fact than before we gained the extra weight.

My muscle density is still very good.

Bone density.

A lady with osteoporosis made a remarkable recovery using IBT

Osteoporosis,Wednesday 24-Mar-1999 writes,Ruby

Over two years ago I sat in the armchair reading a small advert which
asked people to raise their bed by six inches at the head and to reply
and tell what benefits had been noted. (No explanation was given) At
the time I could not move my neck to my left or right side and it ached
continuously. I was unable to sleep at night as i could not get
comfortable. I was only able to turn by gently easing myself. It took
about three to four turns. Getting out of bed was a major obstacle. I
needed help to dress and undress.
I spent most of my nights in the chair with the result that I was
always tired and had no energy.
My problem is osteoporosis of the upper and lower spine. I had tried
hormone replacement therapy and wasted a small fortune with bone
speacialists and ostopaths.
I was resigned to living my days out as best I could having been told
that there was nothing more that could be done for me.
I expected nothing but had nothing to lose so Harry raised the bed by
six inches. We did not take it very seriously but were happy to try
anything.
On the fourth night I had the first full nights sleep since I don't
remember when. By the end of the week I was sleeping naturally and
turning over with ease. My dressing was a problem no longer each day
it became easier. I was able to turn my head without pain right or
left to see the clock without getting up from my chair.
There have been many other benefits too. I have worn glasses from the
age of seven years and I am now sixty eight years. Last year was the
first time I was told that there was a small improvement. My hair
appears thicker my hair brush needs cleaning less often.
Harry had a large suptuating scar since he was six years old. He has
had to continually dress it all of his life. But now it has healed up.
His ear which constantly gave him trouble wityh a discharge has now
cleared up completely.
We both feel that the clock has been put back for us! I give thanks for
this invention and wish Andrew every success in the future for the
benefits he has given us and will continue to do so.
Yours truly
Ruby
This letter was sent to me in the knowledge that it would be used to
help others to follow. Ruby to this day enjoys the continued benefits
of this simple intervention.

Thanks for the suggestion--I rely mainly on quinoa (sprout it first, then cooks quickly--tastes great this way, with whatever add to it)--had tried millet and Kasha, neither agrees with me, but will try your suggestion of the groats. Thanks!

Shye –
Thank you also. Your prep suggestion for quinoa sounds great. Kasha is too strong for my taste and I think that the birds can have the millet.
I feel like you and I are neighbors, since Putnam is only 60 miles north of Manhattan.
Be well and thanks again.

Millet is loaded with iron.

If I may make a suggestion...

Write down in a notebook for one week absolutely everything you eat or drink. And I mean EVERYTHING. If you have a lollipop, write it down. If you have coffee, write it down. Don't worry about it, just write it down.

After the week, go back and take a look, assign calories to everything. (This is easy to do now that you can check out estimates on the web.) It doesn't have to be perfect. The point is only to get an idea of what you're eating.

Oh, and I LOVE my IBT! I was out of my inclined bed for three months while we did some work on the house, but I'm back, and feel so much better for it. GOOD LUCK, weight gain is SOOOO frustrating. I've been on a diet my whole life, so I get it.

Hi! I also want to point out about the thyroid: I came across a study out of a neuro journal in Spain dd around 2007 (sorry, fuzzy memory) that stated that people with "autoimmune" disease have an entirely different measurement for what is healthy thyroid hormone levels. I think it is related to the fact that our bodies are in a reaction mode constantly.

This means that the "normal" hormone blood level tests (I will endeavor to find the article as you can see I am fumbling with the lingo) for people with MS is different than for people without.

My levels had been checked for years and years and always noted as "normal" although it always felt something to me was off. I took the article to my doc who decided to have me just do a month long logue of my waking up temperatures in order to determine if more thyroid would help my body. Sure enough my temps were always hovering between 95 and 97 (farenhiet - what the celcius translation?).... Healthy is determined to be 98.6. So we experimented with natural thyroid (not the synthetics) and certainly altered my life quality!!

Further research explains that there is a hormonal loop that happens in the brains involving thyroid, pituitary, and .... forgetting, maybe hypothalamus?.... if one of those 3 elements are compromised then the proper hormone is not being made and distributed... so, the supplementing with a natural hormone (and please spirits forgive me because I really am a true lacto-free vegetarian) will address those most tiny of insufficiencies that are due to the mechanics of the body.

We started out very small dose, and even that tiny dose I could feel a difference. Now I am at 90 mg and am feeling my life again.

IBT, by the way, has only slimmed me out, I have been doing such since January, and within the first month friends were out of the blue remarking on how my face had changed though couldnt' tell why (I think color and less puffiness)

I will however take true fat cells over oedema any day!!!

Hope this helps :)
