Who do I have to **** to get tested for CCSVI in Canada?

Seriously folks, this is ridiculous!

I work full time with wonderful benefits (paying over 30k/year for my MS drugs). However, I cannot get tested for CCSVI.

I am on 3 waitlists (over 1 year in length). Some clinics have stopped their testing. Some are covered by OHIP, and others are not.

I have been trying to find a family doctor for years and none of them will accept me. My neurologist tells me that CCSVI will not 'pan out'.

Where do I go from here?

I have a doctor's requisition (from a walk-in clinic) for the CCSVI screening, but I cannot find any location that will test me.

What's the deal? How do I get tested? How are all of these people affording to travel overseas to seek treatment? Has anyone had success getting a canadian benefits company to pay the cost?

Please help me! In many ways, I feel more hopeless now than before I heard about CCSVI. I need help!

Port Perry Imaging is still taking referrals however OHIP no longer covers the test. Cost is $250. The wait shouldn't be too bad. Barrie Vascular Imaging is also still doing the test and from what I have read on here looks like there is no charge to the patient. But, I believe there is quite a long waiting list for this one.

I would call Port Perry Imaging and get your name on the list as long as you are fine with paying the $250.

Hey Catlady,

In our case, my wife is unable to work and I work part-time with no benefits. The only way "these people" can afford it is cashing in some retirement funds.

Yes the system here in Canada is pathetic, we call it Universal Healthcare, the problem is to get the healthcare, you have to go some place else in the Universe. Actually that's not true, but that's the way it seems in the case of CCSVI testing and treatment.

Keep your fingers crossed that all of the political pressure out there may get things changed, though realistically I don't think that will happen in the short term. Check out "Angioplasty for All" where their lawyer talked about the law case they are proceeding with in Ontario, he indicates that he expects the Court to give a decision within the next 2 years. He also suggests that as everyone wants full trials and testing to take place, it will likely be 5 to 6 years before we see testing and treatment approved in Canada.

So we might be a little short in our retirement plans, but hopefully my wife can enjoy whats left once she has been treated. Sorry I can't give you any better answer to all your questions, other than agree with the frustration you feel, because I certainly understand how you feel.

Yes, it is ridiculous.....and I am ashamed to be Canadian

I am in Nova Scotia and I had testing done at the Toronto Medical Imaging Center in June. They have a website and are affiliated with Port Perry Imaging....wait list is not bad at all, at least when I went. I didn't pay anything. I received a CD of the Doppler Ultrasound.

Good Luck!

As far as I am aware, no clinics in Canada are offering CCSVI treatment in exchange for sex. I think Amsterdam would be your best bet for that. :P In Canada you can be tested at False Creek Medical Centre, though they will ask for money.

Hey CatLady, Didn't your mom ever warn you.. " they're not going to buy the cow when the milk is free"..
Health Canada is going to sit back and let those that can afford to outsource treatment do so, while the rest of the world does the research.. a very embarassing moment in Canadian history..
..we call it Universal Healthcare, the problem is to get the healthcare, you have to go some place else in the Universe.
 Welshman ..good one

If I've told you once, I've told you once, physicians are not desperate. Lonely, maybe, but never desperate...

Well ok, maybe just a little *bit* desperate. But only on certain weeknights... Did you say you wanted a treatment or just testing? Was that the five-minute argument, or the complete package?

I went to Barrie Imaging - the staff were great and have been trained using Doppler by Dr. Zamboni. As of mid-October, the test is no longer covered and costs $250. My referral went in about 6 months ago, then they called on a Wednesday with appointments for the next day! Getting the procedure done is a whole other issue! Due to the government cutting the funding. Dr. McKenzie is trying to get the money together to open a private clinic to preform the treatment but that could be a while. Good Luck
