During the Christmas holidays, however, she had a flare-up and has been in the hospital recovering her ability to walk. She hasn't had many episodes like that, and the couple hopes they continue to be rare.

"It's not what we're used to, as much as you can get used to something like this," says Mitch.

Linette says her feelings run from scared to excited to angry. She doesn't want to have to go out of the country for the controversial liberation treatment, but has to because it's not approved in Canada.

"I'd much rather have the choice to have it done here at home, even if I still had to pay for it," she says. "My government is forcing me to go out of the country and I don't think that's right!

Mitch says they aren't hoping for a cure, but even if the treatment helps a little, it will be worth it.

"It's a small investment to try and improve somebody's life."
