The Manitoba Gov't has pledged 5 million to fund clinical trials of the CCSVI angioplasty. How do clinical trials work and when will this take place? Do some participating in the clinical trial not get the angioplasty but believe that they are?

Yes, there are many questions, but the important point is that they are supporting it! Makes me proud to be a native Manitoban!

Thornyrose: There are different types of clinical studies. In some, all patients are treated. In a double blind study, which Dr. McDonald is proposing, patients are randomly selected. Some are treated and some are not. Neither knows which group they are in. The neuros who do the follow-up do not know who was treated and who was not. The press release does not say whether the Manitoba study would be double-blinded or not.

A great step forward for Manitoba.

It is frustrating to have a great doc in Ontario like Dr McDonald (and others he is working with) ready and anxious to go with research, but no funding here. It would be great if Ontario would feel pressured into it with Saskatchewan and Manitoba moving forward. Remember. Ontarians, we have a provincial election in October Let's use that to our benefit.

And possibly an election in BC shortly? Seems like putting pressure on provincial premiers could give us (more) traction? Who needs the Feds?

A Conservative MPP began a petition calling for clinical trials in Ontario a few months ago. I'm don't know about NDP provincially.

That's what's so frustrating. Parties in power like Libs in Ontario and BC are resisting treatment and trials. Where Libs are in opposition, they are calling on NDP and Cons in government to act. The NDP and Cons in those provinces (and federal Cons) are resisting.

That's why I remain so skeptical of all of them, except Dr. Kirsty Duncan. Thankfully, Manitoba's NDP government is now joining Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Party) to get things moving.

I will write to Deb Matthews, Ontario Minister of Health (again!), pointing out Canada's largest province and biggest health-care provider is falling behind provinces like Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

I know Deb Matthews is aware of Dr McDonald because he met with her last year.
