I just came across this article - this makes things very confusing!

A small dose of vitamin D3 resulted in significant exacerbation of intimal hyperplasia in this rat carotid artery model and raises the question of the role of dietary vitamin D3 in restenosis following vascular intervention
Very interesting .. and confusing indeed.

This very comprehensive research comments on that particular study (#72 in the notes) and states that hypercalcemia (high levels of serum calcium) was induced by giving the mice 1,25(OH)2D3/ Dihydroxycholecalciferol or Calcitriol--not the form of vitamin D3 we take in supplements.

Some animal studies have used 1,25(OH)2D3 or related analogues to induce hypercalcemia and cause calcification (70-73), with some reports having confused or misused terminology by equating vitamin D3 with the active hormone (70, 72). This latter point was recently illustrated in a Letter to the Editor (74) in which the responding researchers (Norman and Powell), acknowledged that in their 2005 review (70), "...We never stated or contended that vitamin D nutrition causes peripheral arterial disease..." and that "...we used the term ‘vitamin D’ generically on some occasions and agree this lack of precision sometimes can cause ambiguity...".
There are more and more studies coming out every day confirming vit. D's positive effect on the endothelial cells that line our blood vessels. Here's a study out this week that discusses vasodilation and Vit. D---

wanted to bump this and make sure it was cleared up, since I waw it mentioned in other threads....

D3 does not increase intimal hyperplasia.
The hormonal form of D3, prohormone calcidiol, when given to animals, does. This hormone skips the step of going thru the liver and being converted by the body, and it creates calcification in blood vessels.

The body metabolizes D3 from food and supplements differently than the hormone.

Cheer and others, thanks for helping to clear this up. Sorry if I caused any undue worries regarding vitamin D.

Thanks for the clarification Tootzi. You are allowed to change the title on your very first post (edit button). How about:
Vit D3 does not increase intimal hyperplasia in pwMS, only rats.

"A different type of D3 may cause intimal hyperplasia but not the kind we take as supplements no worries all is good"

It is a bit long for a title! :)

i don't think the study could be said to claim: Vit D3 does not increase intimal hyperplasia in pwMS...
more like 'vit d3 (rat poison) shown to increase intimal hyperplasia in rats'
hee hee!
