i was not much of a beer drinker but as the symptoms i have increased when i would drink beer the muscles in my body would ache and hurt more. not the normal pain i have "if there is such a thing as normal".

At ISNVD some doctors spoke of the blood thinning effects of heparin administered before angio and the likely positive affects. It seems that hypercoagubility seems to be an issue for people with MS.

I think Guiness must have some magical properties. Must be sipped from a glass in Dublin as it doesn't travel well. Nectar of the Gods. Barley milk shake.

BTW I think with all sham procedures the people getting the sham are not happy campers.

I don't know if it affects blood flow, but I told my doctor that it seems like I can walk better after a few beers. She prescribed muscle relaxers that just make me sleepy and does not provide the same effect. I take Ampyra and low dose aspirin. Ampyra helps, aspirin doesn't do anything. But the beer, it does something and I'd like to get the effect without the beer...

Welcome to ThisIsMS. I don't know if this explains your observations, but alcohol is known to act as a blood thinner. It's probably not the best thing to rely on as a treatment though. There are a lot of empty calories in alcohol which will spike your blood sugar and insulin levels. It's also pretty hard on the liver.

I don't think there is any harm in having a beer with dinner, however I would think that wine would be a better choice. Red wine has some good things in it like resveratrol and other antioxidents. Since it has about twice the alcohol of beer, you would not need to drink as much of it to have the same effect. The only drawback might be that red wine does give some people a headache.

Wine doesn't do it for me, actually makes it worse. I am now experimenting with a low dose of diazepam, baclofen, and Amprya. Diazepam affects GABAa like alcohol, and Baclofen affects GABAb. Oddly for me the diazepam offsets the drowsiness of the baclofen. Diazepam & baclofen 3 times per day, Amprya twice. Experimenting under doctors supervision of course. I'm going to give it a couple weeks to see what happens, and I will post back the results.

BTW as far as liver and insulin, I keep close track though annual blood tests.
