This is a very technical article but interesting. Its title is:

Somatostatin preserved blood brain barrier against cytokine induced alterations: Possible role in Multiple Sclerosis
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23770458

The abstract can be summarized by its last sentence: "These data indicate that decreased levels of SST contribute to failure of the BBB in MS"

And this Somatostating thing (SST) is an old friend in this forum. It appears in 4 previous posts:

Somatostatin "is a peptide hormone that regulates the endocrine system" and, thus, affects insulin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin-degrading_enzyme

Insulin-degrading enzyme, also known as IDE is a human enzyme </wiki/Enzyme>.[1]
Known alternatively as insulysin or insulin protease, Insulin Degrading Enzyme (IDE) is a large zinc-binding protease </wiki/Protease> of the M16A metalloprotease subfamily known to cleave multiple short polypeptides that vary considerably in sequence. IDE was first identified by its ability to degrade the B chain of the hormone insulin </wiki/Insulin>

...

The first step of the mechanism includes a zinc-bound hydroxide group performing a nucleophilic attack on a carbon substrate that materializes into the intermediate INT1.
Could this be the role for zinc?

Suppresses the release of pancreatic hormones
Inhibits insulin </wiki/Insulin> release when somatostatin is released from delta cells of pancreas[10]
Inhibits the release of glucagon </wiki/Glucagon>[10]
