Sclerosi multipla, si accenda una speranza di cura

BOLOGNA - Serviranno ancora anni di ricerche, e gli esperti sottolineano che "non si possono e non si vogliono creare illusioni", ma una recente scoperta medica sembra aprire una strada alla speranza di combattere la sclerosi multipla, o almeno di avere un'arma in più. C'è una malattia vascolare, si chiama Ccsvi (insufficienza venosa cerebro-spinale), su cui si può intervenire con buoni risultati con un piccolo intervento chirurgico in day hospital, e ora le ricerche cercano di indagare i possibili legami tra questa malattia e la sclerosi multipla. La speranza è che il miglioramento della funzione di drenaggio venoso cerebrale, cioè il trattamento curativo della Ccsvi, possa contribuire a migliorare lo stato dei pazienti affetti da sclerosi. Ne hanno parlato Paolo Zamboni, medico e docente all'università di Ferrara che ha dato il via alle ricerche, e Fabrizio Salvi, medico dell'unità di neurologia dell'Ospedale Bellaria di Bologna, che ha affiancato Zamboni nelle sue indagini a partire dal 2007.

Salvi conferma di aver riscontrato la presenza "di un'alterazione dello scarico venoso cerebro-spinale in tutti i pazienti affetti da sclerosi multipla seguiti dal Centro 'il Bene' del dipartimento di neuroscienze di Bologna e studiati dal gruppo di Ferrara di Zamboni". Ma si è riscontrato anche un miglioramento, in coloro che sono stati sottoposti a interventi, sul fronte della sensazione di affaticamento, sul piano dei disturbi cognitivi e delle cefalee. La necessità di verificare se la sovrapposizione tra Ccsvi e sclerosi multipla fosse una casualità italiana o meno ha reso necessaria la collaborazione con altri istituti: così è entrato nel progetto di ricerca anche l'americano Jacobs institute of neurology.
