Sorry for beating a dead horse

I know this has probably been covered a thousand times over on this board and I apologize up front. Anyway, here's my thing:

Sept 2012:
Started having weird feeling in my left calf, sort of like a knot in the center of the calf. It eventually started to very lightly twitch deep in the muscle. The twitch would kind of radiate out or flutter out when it would stop. My foot would also sort of tingle like it was falling asleep, but never went completely asleep. Didn't think much about it. This went on for a few days and just stopped.

December 2012:
Woke up and my left calf was extremely sore and stiff (the knot feeling was still there). It was hard to walk since it was so stiff and I was limping around. At this point, I thought it my be a blood clot so I went to the doctor. Basically, the doctor fiddled around with my knee saying something about a cyst that can form and pretty much dismissed it, or so I felt. Then, like the first time, it just all stopped.

February 2013:
My entire left leg started having an overall heavy feeling. My left calf, again, became insanely sore. So sore that even trying to massage or stretch it hurt like crazy. It wasn't stiff like last time, however. Eventually, my left thigh had a spasm that lasted a good 20 seconds and was the most intense muscle spasm I've had. It didn't hurt or anything, but I thought it was bizarre. I had a doctor appointment for a different thing and brought this up to my doctor. He said "Well, sounds like you overdid it while working out." I didn't do that, but again felt dismissed. Anyway, as the previous times, this went on for several days and just stopped.

April 2013:
My left hip became sore and the weird, knot sensation came back in my left calf. A new thing appeared in that my hamstring would become tight. It didn't hurt, but it felt like I'd pull it if I did something too strenuous. Also, my hamstring would sometimes feel like it was about to twitch but never did - you know how it kind of has a tickling sensation before a muscle twitches? That's how it felt. Again, only a few days of this.

May 2013:
My lower back started to ache. "Ah-ha! Sciatica!" I thought. Another trip to the doctor and explained everything new. He said that it doesn't sound like a pinched nerve or anything because the pain would be worse. He then referred me to a neurologist. The back ache, again, was a couple day affair.

Obviously, the neurologist had no firm ideas after one meeting. She thought it was weird that everything started in my calf and worked its way up to my hip. She scheduled me for blood work and an EMG/NCV. I did the blood work, which came back with no issues. I haven't done the EMG/NCV because I have a 2000 deductible(!) and can't afford it.

July 2013:
Muscle aches in my lower leg, my knee started to ache. The top of my foot would ache near where my toes and foot meet. And, while I don't feel sleepy or tired, I just felt completely lethargic.

Sept 2013:
Pretty much the same as July. Add to it that my arms/shoulders would ache - sort of like the aches you get when you're about to get hit with the flu. Just last night, my arms kind of hurt (probably a 6 on a scale of 1-10). Woke up this morning and my triceps on my right arm is sore.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but I'm a male and 37 years old.

I want to get to the bottom of this, but honestly can't afford it. I live paycheck to week before paycheck. Just seeing if anybody else has had these symptoms and/or what path I might go down in terms of my own research.

this whole story just screams magnesium. super common overlooked deficiency. and an inexpensive serum test. you want your result to be high high normal. deficiency has been demonstrated to occur in the low to mid normal range.

physical exertion, stress, alcohol and caffeine all deplete magnesium stores.

you need 400mg of dietary mag per day when healthy, 600mg minimum if symptomatic. one cup of boiled (ie super densely packed) spinach is a great healthy choice. provides close to 150mg per 1c. serving. organic is more nutrient dense than conventional.

here's a good resource for figuring out foods/servings/amounts to reach healthy dietary magnesium targets:
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tnam ... #foodchart

if you cut back on dietary gluten, your body will be able to retain its magnesium better.

magnesium supplements don't cost a lot BUT the cheapest ones are useless. look for magnesium glycinate or at a minimum, magnesium citrate. do not buy magnesium oxide.

hope that helps :)
