Hi all,
Just curious as to how many of you had mononucleosis at some time. I am curious about having mononuclerosis and a possible relationship to the later development of MS.
I had mono when I was nineteen and turned twenty. My liver and spleen swelled and I would get swollen lymph nodes for years afterwards.
How about you?

I have heard something about this before...when I first started investigating. I don't have a DX but I have been told MS is the only thing not ruled out. Anyway, I too had a long but with mono as a teen. Around 15/16 years old. I was affected for about 3 months |

My son had mono when he was 8. His teenage sister had a really bad case of it, and he caught it from her. His episode was fairly mild in comparison to hers. He is 16 now, and was diagnosed with MS 3 years ago. I've heard that there is a correlation over and over again, but not once has anyone explained to me what it is!
Have a good weekend!

Hey Jazzcat,
I also had Mono as a teenager. At the age of 16. I don't remember it being too servere though. I hope there is no connection as my teenage son had it last year (he was 13). He had it much worse than I did.
I did see the poll and voted.
How are you doing by the way?

I had mono when I was 12/13 years old. It had me in bed for two months. No fun. I missed alot of school.
My Dad had it. I'm not sure at what age except it was definitily school age. He was hospitalized for some time before he finally got better.
I also voted on the poll! _________________ MS is the gift that keeps on giving. |

Hi OneEyeBlind and all!
OneEye, I'm doing well. I am still--very slowly--gaining stamina and walking ability and, other than that, no new symptoms! That makes me very happy!
And you? How are you doing?
peace,
jazzy |

| First ms symptoms started age 23. I've been very lucky, and at age 52 I'm currently experiencing my 4th episode. I've never had mono, but several years ago after a regular blood test, Dr. asked how old I was whenI had mono, as it showed on my blood test! INTERESTING!!!! |

Hello, I see the last message left here was 2004. Is that correct? Did I miss something?
I'm a new person to this discussion and was interested to find out what there is any connection of having mononucleosis as a teenager and later developing MS.
Are there any PI's doing research in this area? If so, would you be so kind as to direct me to these studies so I could read them. Thanks! |

Welcome to ThisIsMS. There have been many related research news articles discussed here. You can search the forum and look for posts discussing epstein bar virus or EBV (note that you may wish to read my notes on using the site's search uitility). Another option is to search through PubMed.

yeah i had it when i was about 16, nearly killed me!! i was being recruited by every division I football team in the US. I weighed in at around 285lbs and could bench press 425lbs and run the 40 yd dash in 4.9 secounds. I lost 35 lbs in less than a month along with alot of my strength and speed. I did recover enough to go on and play college football, but once word got out that i had been sick it was like turning off a light switch, all the big schools were gone!!!!! and yes i think that this had something to do w/ triggering my ms!! here are a few schools that were interested in me: notre dame, usc, miami, florida state, univ arkansas, army, navy, michigan, etc.... wonder were i would be if it had not fucked me the way it did? sorry. just pisses me off th even think about it. i was number 5 recruit in the state of tx. in 1991. ................................................................the rest is history, lol _________________ Don't just stand there Forest..................RUN, RUN FOREST RUN |
