The UK MS Trust is hosting a seminar in London on stem cells and the future of MS research. Details as follows:

Stem cells and the future of MS research

An MS Trust event

Wednesday 6 September - 7pm
The Royal Society, London
Speakers:

Prof Alistair Compston - University of Cambridge

Prof Neil Scolding - University of Bristol

Chair:

Prof Alan Thompson - Institute of Neurology, London

The headline grabbing but unproven treatments that are available commercially have tended to distract attention from the exciting advances in research that are happening in the UK and around the world.

To investigate the evidence, the MS Trust is hosting an event featuring some of the key researchers in the field. The speakers will discuss current and future research into MS and describe how stem cell therapy may develop. Following the talks, there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Not planning to attend, but have asked if the MS Trust is going to produce a note of the key points discussed. All three Profs are top dogs in UK MS research. Prof Scolding is leading research on stem cells (from your own bone marrow not from embryos). Prof Compston is part of the Cambridge University outfit. By coincidence I'm going to Cambridge next week and will try to find out what news / breakthroughs are on the horizon.

The MS Trust is planning to record the seminar (which will be wider than stem cells). I have requested a copy.

Here's the link. Due to technical problems Professor Scolding's presentation wasn't recorded. They have used the presentaton he gave at the MS Life Conference in March.

Prof Scolding is Raven's neuro and recently intimated that human trials may start within 12 months.

It's down to EBV then....

I am not sure whether I can allow myself to be hopeful just yet though.

Campath sounds great for early RR, Scolding is my hero though - when he gets the results on remyelination it will be fantastic news for us.

The European Charcot Foundation has a symposium scheduled in Sicily in November: Regeneration and Repair in MS

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be links to abstracts of the presentations/discussions. They're definitely working on all of this though. Smile

It looks like a full day will be devoted to stem cell treatment in MS and that Prof. Scolding will be participating.
