Anyone taken this drug before?
Day 5 was today. I was aware I could go from 100mg to 200mg anywhere from 4-7 days in.
Well, my facial pain was terrible today, so I took 100mg upon waking (I take 100mg in the evening). My gosh. My face feels NUMB LOL.
Is this normally what the drug does? I have very little experience with it. My mouth pain went away for the most part at least! _________________ Dx RRMS March 5, 2008.
I was on Neurontin for a couple of years, and just recently switched to Lyrica.
I started on 300mg of Neurontin three times a day - never had a dose so low as yours - I wouldn't think that would get rid of your pain! Your doc must be cautious.
My hubby had a trapped nerve in his neck, didn't want surgery, and didn't want to get hooked on pain killers, so his neuro prescribed Neurontin for the terrible nerve pain he was getting in his arm - he started on 400mg three times a day, took it for a couple of months, but keeps a prescription on file at the pharmacy in case he needs it again (which he has). It is the kind of drug that you have to take regularly for a week or two to feel the full benefit (not like a Tylenol!).
It does take some getting used to - made me very drowsy and lethargic, bit light-headed, and foggier in my head (even more so than the ms) but it was a huge relief for my pain to drop from screaming agony to (mostly) and irritation, and the side effects do lessen. Of course, I had further relapses and worsening neuropathy over those 2 years, so my dose was increased a couple of times, with no noticable worsening of side-effects. So my take is, it takes a while for your body to get used to the drug, and you will feel a little odd in the interim. Don't be too scared of upping your dose (within your prescription), and if you still have pain, call your neuro and ask about upping it some more. Just don't drive or sign any important documents until you are used to it!
By the end, I was up to 600mg 4 times a day - I think the max is 3600mg in 24 hours. I never got that high...
Hope the drug helps - I would have gone mad (or madder) without it. I also take Amitriptyline 50mg at night for neuropathic pain (started on 10mg, then 25mg, then 50mg) - it works well with the Neurontin.
All the best - if you have any more questions, i am here. _________________ Ali
