In the responses on this thread, I suspect that I’m not alone in seeing a commonality in the factors that contribute (cause?) an exacerbation. In summary, the response to MrT’s query is that the common factors that supposedly portend a flare-up are things that put stress on the immune system: season...

Re: Diet

I also still am curious as to what it is about Swank's research design that makes people skeptical. Rev - what was it about the diet that you initially were scrutinizing? At the end of chapter 10, Swank and dugan say that "on a well-balanced diet the intake of vitamins is quite adequate and su...

Treez, A few years back, I started on a writing project to show how the Swank diet does not work; thing is, I discovered the contrary: it does work! That is, the only long-term data (25 years or more) available on MS shows that low-fat, nutrient-dense diets (like Swank) have a positive effect on peo...

Pre- and Probiotic Immune Modulation?

I read something recently this brings on a query regarding nondigestible food compounds: pre- and probiotics. Doctor Steven Pratt, M.D. of the Scripps Clinic in San Diego says that there are many double blind, placebo-controlled human trials that show that the synergy of pre- and probiotic food comp...

suppressive modulation?

Deb, I know, it's just semantics; however, an "immunosuppressant" is an "immunomodulator." True, to modulate could (and should) mean to enhance, but doesn't anything foreign that alters a body system in essence suppressing something? I read a post of yours about the necessity of ...

Aaron, Yeah, it would be a pretty neat article; however, I only have minor knowledge about mathematics; that is, just enough to know that the medical industry is following some scary logic. A better approach (this is me thinking out-loud) would be to find a mathematics professor who happens to have ...

I was diagnosed in 1997
I have had 3 MRI's taken.
Since my first MRI, each has shown adecrease in lesion load.
I took Avonex for 6 years; I am currently taking LDN.

I went back to investigate a couple of things, and you know what I noticed? The NMSS MUST have at least consulted with some researchers regarding your inquiries because their "notice" on their website regarding the use of LDN is signed like this: Clinical Programs Department in collaborat...

Better than Swank

I am often critical of Swank and Dugan's The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book , because I find it too limiting, and too dedicated on what foods to eliminate and not dedicated enough to what foods to add; however, my personal microbiotic diet follows Swank and Dugan's basic low-fat premise. I think that ...

Daunted says, "So I think whole foods are valuable but that judging supplements to be less than them, is incorrect; they are not lesser, just different." I don't wish to discount those who have had good results from supplementation; in fact, at one time I was a supplement pusher because I ...

Why Chance it?

Susannah, As far as I know, there have been no studies on Aspartame being extra harmful to people who suffer from MS; however, medical research suggests that Aspartame can cause harm to a healthy body. Since I have MS, I don't have a "healthy" body; therefore, I believe it's in my best int...

Sharon, If you visit other threads on this forum, you will find that MRI's, lesion loads and what they have to do with the mechanism of MS are insignificant. For what it's worth, my past two MRIs have shown a reduction in lesions. The first reduction was shown after suffering on Avonex for nearly se...
