issue on autoimmune disease hypotheses

About a year ago, LyndaCarol suggested we have a forum on multiple sclerosis hypotheses. I guess that didn't happen but it seemed like autoimmune disease hypotheses would be a good topic for a journal to cover. The journal, Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology, has just published an issue (F...

Re: A question for US Republicans with MS

I was expecting Michelle Obama to be involved in promoting MS research since her father had suffered from it. I am glad she has been working to support military families though.

MS slideshow from WebMD

Don't know if this has been posted on ThisIsMS before but I thought it was worth noting.

Re: MSIF concerned over rise in incidence of MS in India

Bhopal-like contamination sites could be a possible explanation. Over 500,000 people were harmed from exposure to the accident (release of methyl isocyanate gas in 1984) and >3000 died soon after the exposure. Bhopal is in the exact center of India. Of course cyanates can damage nerves. I would also...

Dignan, Thanks for posting that. I am feeling more confident about my polyamine hypothesis over the past few years. I presented it at a Sjogren's syndrome meeting in Brest, France in 2009 and, based on that, I was invited to present it in Zurich this past October at an international rheumatoid arthr...

That's an excellent idea. I'll try to come up with some articles for it too. We might want to cover the shortcomings of EAE as a model for MS, if that hasn't already been covered.

The acrolein could be coming from elevated polyamines, and the polyamines are elevated because of over-expression of X-linked polyamine genes, spermine synthase and spermidine/spermine-N1-acetyltransferase, at Xp22.1 when X chromosome inactivation is lost in a few cells. This is what I was talking a...

Thanks. It seems to have survived scrutiny by autoimmune researchers so far and gotten them interested. I am hoping to get a chance to talk at the Epigenetics World Congress in Boston next April to put it in front of epigenetics researchers. So I will have to add a bit more about autoimmune disease ...

Polyamine hypothesis

Six years ago we had a discussion about the polyamine hypothesis I have been developing. Since then I have kept relatively quiet about it here but I continued working on it. I have developed it a lot further, but it is still centered around the same concepts as were discussed. Last year I presented ...

Tacco, Welcome to the Canadian suburbs. The University of South Florida in Tampa is about a 40-50 minute drive from Clearwater (from Clearwater Beach it is probably a bit longer). You might want to check out the USF Neurology dept. One of the doctor's there seems to get very good reviews from his pa...

Have your doctor check for secondary Sjogren's syndrome. That could explain dry eyes and mouth, but there could be other explanations, such as a new medicine or change in your diet.

Volcano advice please

Coverage in Florida of the Icelandic volcano does not give much detail or forecasting about the mess and particularly about traveling to Europe. I imagine it is very difficult to predict. I am wondering if anyone has found a good source for information about the volcano, ash cloud predictions, and e...

Do either of you know what type breast cancer you had?

I believe there could be a connection between basal-like breast cancer and autoimmune diseases.
