Really wish I were scientific!

NHE, I appreciate the info concerning insulin. For some reason I could not connect to the document, but read and re-read the abstract. I had several problems with it and the conclusion--perhaps a function of my nonscientific mind. The lingo was beyond me: what is ROS? p47 phox expression. IKK, etc.?...

My two-cents

Granted I only read through this article once so far, but it left initial impressions on me. 'Most all accepted information about this AWFUL disease was collected in one place. I found it interesting that the word, "autoimmmune" was never used. The general consensus seemed to be that MS mu...

My injections

My manual dexterity is so poor that I could not manage any injections. My husband is wonderful; and although he hated administering them, he learned how and gave me the injections all those years. He became the expert. He had given me the Betaseron earlier and the Avonex later when I switched. He di...

My experience

I used Avonex for about seven years and had no experience like yours that I could attribute to Avonex. I did have similar symptoms (I got very weak and couldn't walk.) with every virus--elevated temperature, cold, or flu--that I contracted. I expect you will be better when this cold and accompanying...

Musings on MS as I sat in the sunshine

I consider myself quite average and so figure there are some like me out there, who let their minds run wild. MS colors every aspect of my life and I think about it most of the time. As I sat in the sunshine today, I thought about it again. I share my thoughts with you; maybe you have had the same o...

Please forgive my interjection

Mac--As I read your post, I am struck by the common element in your friend with asthma, allergies, sinus infections--inflammation! (You know I think this fits with my suspicions of inflammation/insulin.) Your comment of Knocking back even SOME of it with abx protocol would be a relief to him and his...

Reflection on BBC article

I know we appreciate all your posts, Ian, even this one. It shows us a possibility in graphic detail(!) of a future that we all fear. As Amelia said, the key is hope; the drug pipeline is one hope, ongoing research is another. As bleak as the future looks at time, as much as I cry (NOT good because ...

Leg itching

Please note that in bromley's General Discussion post on Restless Leg Syndrome "itching" is listed as a possible symptom. Also, "people with diabetes were at particular risk." Could this all fall under "peripheral neuropathy?" Diabetics have problems with this, I know. ...

Claims need to be challenged

Ian, I publicly support your views. Claims need to be challenged! (Even any concerning insulin.) We are all looking for answers, but many "eyes" looking are more apt to find them! Until the definitive understanding is there, sharing information and ideas is the only course of action I see ...

Questions for Nick

It seems that everything I read lately brings questions to my mind--your turn, Nick. Please take them as simple curiosity, no other intent here. When you wrote: Food proteins also provide a close enough molecular sequencing to act as a mimic and their ingestion provides a daily source of targets for...

Makes sense to me!

Brock--Your observation makes sense to me. Autoimmunity cannot explain remission! Keep thinking and asking questions! You summed up my thoughts on this very well. And in about paragraph 9 of the original article posted by Dunmann, I had trouble with this: The people with MS, who are universally infe...

Purpose of the drug industry

Like most people, I'm sure, I would like the drug companies to have great humanitarian purposes behind their action. But Lisa and most of us know the real motive. There are so many good ideas in the book recommended by NHE, Overdo$ed America by John Abramson, M.D., that I must quote one more here: &...

Statins, in general

I admit that I was taken in by all the publicity on statins for everything! I had even tried Lipitor myself for MS, but saw no improvement. Now, after reading Overdo$ed America by John Abramson, M.D. (a MUCH appreciated book recommendation by NHE), I have a more skeptical opinion of the whole drug s...

Addendum to my April 28 post here

Rather than edit my post of three days ago, I'll just put this here. To the Chicago Trib story of a family plagued by MS, I will add my own anecdote. (I enjoy the relative anonymity of this site and do not plan to tell my life's story!) I was adopted, but learned some of my biological background a f...

The inflammation/insulin slant

I have never smoked either and yet I have MS! However I was raised in a household where my father smoked ALL the time. (Being trapped in the car with it was especially awful.) Without evidence, it seems to me that smoke (cigarette or other source) causes inflammation leading to...excess inssulin pro...
