DRY mouth!

If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

DRY mouth!

Post by SaintLouis »

Does anyone have any suggestions for dry mouth? (And eyes too, for that matter). One day my mouth pretty much decided to stop making spit. It is horrible, some days are worse than others but I cannot not find a rhyme or reason for the variation.

I've been taking Evoxac and it does help, but still it is bad. Has anyone found anything that helps them? Anyone else have really bad dry mouth? I am terrified of what my next dental check-up might show. No spit = cavities!!

Thanks.

Have your doctor check for secondary Sjogren's syndrome. That could explain dry eyes and mouth, but there could be other explanations, such as a new medicine or change in your diet.

They've done all the rheumy bloodwork for Sjogren's, all negative. No lip biopsy done, and I likely will not agree to one. Because they can be inconclusive I've read but if it comes back positive....I'll still be in the same situation, trying to find something that helps with dry mouth.

Anybody?

Cod liver oil, for the Vit A especially. In beginning, 1 Tablespoon--Sonne's #5 brand the best (re: purity and non-contamination).

A dry mouth is quite a common side effect of different medications I think. Could that be it?

I will give the cod liver oil a try, thanks for the suggestion.

As far as other meds cuasing it, the only things I take regularly are Vit. D, iron and the evoxac, which is for dry mouth, so hopefully that's not somehow making it worse. You never know I guess, everyone reacts differently to meds.

Just a few other thoughts! I am not sure if you are having issues chewing but believe it or not if you have cut down on your chewing, due to your MS, your salivary glands get smaller and will produce less saliva. Depression and anxiety can also cause a dry mouth. Good luck!

I had this problem and it was caused by secondary effects. Specialy from med for bladder problems, now for bladder problems I take VESICARE, the problem is much less whith vesicare. Another med that cause dry mouth is baclofen for spasm.

I have been living without saliva for more than a decade for different causes; tongue cancer, medications, etc... One very surprising benefit of my liberation procedure was SALIVA!!! I did not expect it so it could not be placebo!!!
For 6 weeks I had soooo much saliva that I felt sick to my stomach! I was drooling during the night. Two months today, it's back to what it used to be.
No saliva= bad teeth, year after year I have monstruous dental bills (3 to 5K)
