There have been several "cures" for mouse MS over the years. To date, there has not been one that has worked in human MS which is quite different. My wife took part in a clinical trial back in the mid 90's on one these drugs that worked wonders in the mouse. Unfortunately, the trial was stopped after one year when the drug caused a fatal heart attack in one patient.

Hopefully this recent discovery will prove differently but it would be several years before we would benefit from it.

P.S. Animal data is different from human data. Scripps' work was supported by National Institutes of Health grants totaling $3.6 million.

I can understand that receiving any kind of treatment is your call BUT....there is no way on earth the researchers would give you a drug that has not been tested and determined safe for human use. This is a very slow process in the world of drugs and the people who control this would be open to a huge liability danger if they didn't follow the established protocols.

Having followed MS research for some 45 years now, I really get tired of hearing all the wonderful discoveries they have made curing and reversing MS in that poor mouse. None of them has translated into an effective therapy for MS patients so you would think that perhaps they are using the wrong scientific model or have been looking in the wrong area.

just one big rat race...or "mouse" race....looks like another day in the wheelchair...

I do not even understand what is this form of MS induced in the rats?.. is that demyelination? Well guess what, MS is NOT only about demylenation... as you know many other conditions cause nerve damage (such as diabetes, lupus... or whatver) but ehy do not end up in a wheelchair... so it's time for researchers to first define what IS MS...

EAE, or mouse MS as it is commonly known, is injected into the mouse's brain and the result is demylenation. In that instance, a foreign body causes the mouse's immune system to react and thus cause the lesions. But in humans, they still do not know what causes the demylenation. The conventional and long term theory is that the immune system turns on the brain cells and does the damage. More recently some researchers believe some other damaging action causes the inflamation in the brain and the person's immune system reacts to that in a normal manner.

The bottom line is that after some 70 years of research, MS has no known cause and nothing remotely close to being effective in treating it.

I watched my wife suffer from this disease year after year and only became more and more frustrated at the total lack of progress in the docs trying to find any kind of answer.

If the target were the moon, the situation in MS research reminds me of Apollo and Voyager.

They both traveled in space (the Voyager vessels still do), but only Apollo made it to the moon. Why? Because the former is still going towards the wrong direction!

Just space travel is not all that is required to go to the moon.
Just research is not all that is required to cure MS.

They both have to be done towards the right direction. But in research, funding is gained regardless of whether the direction is right or wrong.

I'm with the Greek on this one, from one Greek to another..
