Prolactin secretion stimulates oligodendrocyte

Post by Leonard »

Have you seen this before?

A method for treating demyelinating diseases such as MS comprised of administering to an individual afflicted with a demyelinating disease a medicament that induces prolactin secretion. Prolactin secretion stimulates oligodendrocyte precurser cells, which remyelinate demyelinated nerve cells.

Somewhat further down, there is recognition that MS is a metabolic disease.

I read through the patent request for this new medicine (which is a combination of existing drugs) and it was very interesting reading. Seems to be composed of drugs that block the effects of dopamine at the pituitary or deplete dopamine in the body.

Apparently prolactin increases re-myelination and dopamine reduces the amount of prolactin in the body.

Prolactin is also released in men after ejaculation causing a temporary loss of arousal. The more prolactin, the longer the period of time before the man can become aroused again. Unusually high amounts of prolactin are suspected to be responsible for impotence and loss of libido.
