Fecal Microbiota Transplantation - 3 cases of MS remission

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

T.J. Borody, S.M. Leis, J.L. Campbell, M. Torres, A. Nowak, , Centre for
Digestive Diseases, Five Dock, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA;
ABSTRACT BODY:

Purpose: Recent evidence implicates the GI microbiota in the progression of neurological diseases such as Parkinsons Disease 1, Multiple Sclerosis and Myasthenia Gravis 2. We report three patients with MS diagnoses who achieved durable symptom reversal with FMT for constipation.

Methods: Case study observations on three MS cases

Results:
Case 1: A 30 yr old male with constipation, vertigo and impaired concentration and a concomitant history of MS and trigeminal neuralgia. Neurological symptoms included severe leg weakness and he required a wheelchair and an indwelling urinary catheter. Previous failed treatments included Mexiletine,
Tryptanol and 9-interferon. The patient underwent 5 FMT infusions for his constipation, with its complete resolution. Interestingly his MS also progressively improved, regaining the ability to walk and facilitating the removal of his catheter. Initially seen as a ‘remission’, the patient remains well 15 yrs post-FMT without relapse.

Case 2: A 29 yr old wheelchair-bound male with ‘atypical MS’ diagnosis and severe, chronic constipation. He reported parasthesia and leg muscle weakness. The patient received 10 days of FMT infusions which resolved his constipation. He also noted progressive improvement in neurological symptoms, regaining the
ability to walk following slow resolution of leg parasthesia. Three years on the patient maintains normal motor, urinary and GI function.

Case 3: An 80 yr old female presented with severe chronic constipation, proctalgia fugax and severe muscular weakness resulting in difficulty walking, diagnosed as ‘atypical’ MS. She received 5 FMT infusions with rapid improvement of constipation and increased energy levels. At eight months she reported complete resolution of bowel symptoms and neurological improvement, now walking long distances unassisted. Two years post-FMT, the patient was asymptomatic.

Conclusion: We report reversal of major neurological symptoms in three patients after FMT for their underlying GI symptoms. As MS can follow a relapsing-remitting course, this unexpected discovery was not reported until considerable time had passed to confirm prolonged remission. It is tempting to speculate that FMT achieved eradication of an occult GI pathogen driving MS symptoms.
Our finding that FMT can reverse MS-like symptoms suggests a GI infection underpinning these disorders. It is hoped that such serendipitous findings may encourage a new direction in neurological research.

this fits in the broader picture, see http://www.thisisms.com/forum/general-d ... 8-315.html
my posting of Apr 20, 2012 8:20 am which refers to the same cases..

I have always wondered if the benefit that an MS patient may experience undergoing antibiotic treatment (e.g., Combined Antibiotic Protocol of Stratton/Wheldon, et al.) is due, in some part, to the alteration of the gut microbiome.

perhaps antibiotics can help change the gut microbiota.
but it is Metformin that changes the gut microbiota and that fits the broader picture, also in its relation to diabetes 2

Perhaps antibiotics, or FMT are usefull to remove persistant bad bacteria, but the first step is nutrition, the gut microbiome depends on a long term dietary pattern.

I’ve met doctors for whom MS is not a mystery and realized that they are numerous. Leaky gut is well known since many years. What is tragic is that the world of neurology does not admit it yet. But it’s coming...

(I'm not conviced that parasite eggs are necessary if we have a good nutrition, except for the MS business)

I deteriorated significantly after taking a powerful probiotic supplement... I wonder what is in a fecal microbiotic transplantation?!
3 years antibiotics, 06/09 bilateral jug stents at C1, 05/11 ballooning of both jug valves, 07/12 stenting of renal vein, azygos & jug valve ballooning,

Either the supplements did nothing to you and it was the normal course of the desease, or it has done something and your immune system has overreact.
I guess FMT is like putting an entire healthy microbiome directly in the gut, and that probiotics pills are made of only 1(perhaps several) type of bacteria. It must take time to the microbiome to become healthy with diet and help of probiotics.
Once I had tested 3 pills of probiotics instead of 1. I felt really bad for two days, but no new MS symptoms.

At the time of taking this multi probiotic which was a super American mega probiotic I got terrible stomach aches and my walking deteriorated a lot but transiently. I stopped the probiotic and I improved quite a bit. I'm obviously a bit wary of probiotics now. Perhaps only certain probiotics should be used...

You should find a more balanced dosage. Probiotics shouldn’t be harmfull in moderation. MS is a long term process.

It’s not a treatment.
It has been experimented for people with gastrointestinal problem and for people who have also MS, it has create unexpected positiv results. It’s very simple and safe apart that this is disgusting. But there is other less disgusting way to change the gut microbiota (see nutrition), but don't expect immediate results.

Actually it is being offered as a treatment here in Portland, Oregon for a variety of diseases. Here's the link if you're interested in coming over here and having it done: http://fecalmicrobiotatransplantation.com/FMT/home.html
