Heat and excessive sweating

Post by Kacy »

Hi everyone. I'm a 33 year old female, diagnosed with MS in March 2015. I had two relapses back to back, but haven't had any relapses since May 2015. I feel almost normal most of the time, except for one thing. When my body temperature rises, I start to sweat profusely on my face and scalp. It doesn't take much exertion to cause it, just walking around at a quick pace. Sometimes I'll just be having a conversation with someone and break out in a dripping sweat. It's very embarrasing and so disheartening because I can't control it. It stops after I cool down, using the little fan I keep at work.

I am grateful that my disease seems to be mild at this time and the symptoms don't get worse during these sweating episodes. I just wish the one symptom I do have wasn't so noticeable to everyone around me. Does anyone else have this problem or advice in dealing with it?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

That may not be MS. Check with a doctor if you have any other symptoms to go with each event.

A fan won't lower your core temperature. Try making a drink up using one of those Bullit type wizzers with crushed ice and some fruit. Watermelon works well.

Welcome to ThisIsMS, Kacy.

With your emphasis on sweating, especially on your face and scalp, I am reminded that I have VERY often seen "head sweating" listed in the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.

7 Signs You May Have a Vitamin D Deficiency
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... ptoms.aspx

1. You have dark skin
2. You feel "blue"
3. You're 50 or older
4. You're overweight or obese (or have a higher muscle mass)
5. Your bones ache
6. Head sweating (*"One of the first signs of vitamin D deficiency.")
7. You have gut trouble

5. Depression
6. Sweaty Head
7. Flu/Respiratory Infections
8. High Blood Pressure or Heart Disease
9. Chronic Kidney Disease
10. Constant Infections
11. Asthma Attack
12. Chronic Gum Disease (Swollen, Bleeding Gums)

#1 Bone, teeth, & muscle weakness
#2 Feeling sad or depressed
#3 Great pain sensitivity
#4 Chronic gum disease (swelling, reddening, and bleeding of the gums)
#5 High blood pressure
#6 Fatigue & sleepiness
#7 Mood swings (serotonin production)
#8 Decreased endurance (lower energy levels)
#9 Overweight (Vit D is fat soluble, stored in fat cells)
#10 Gut issues (fat absorption problems: Crohn’s, gluten-sensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease, stomach ache)
#11 Head sweating (early sign of deficiency)
#12 Allergies

If you have not had the vitamin D blood test called "25-hydroxy D," I suggest that you request your GP to order one for you. (Also, request your own copy of the test result so that you have the actual number. The California-based group, GrassrootsHealth, http://www.GrassrootsHealth.net recommends that the vitamin D level should be at least 40-60 ng/mL.)

Your sweating problem may not be related to your MS diagnosis at all – it is possible to have two different conditions and separate symptoms going on at the same time.

Hi Kacy,

I have the same issue. I get hot very easily. I walk 100 feet I get very hot. If the temperature if 74 or higher I sweat very easily. So needless to say the heat is really bad for me. Does not take much at all for me to sweet. Thankfully I work at a desk job and sit all day. But if I have to walk to the bathroom by the time I come back I am heated up. The office temperature I keep at 74 anything higher I bust out in a sweet just sitting in my chair. I have a large fan at my desk to cool me off. So funny I have the large fan at my desk but it helps a bit. Often if I come in early or work late I will lower the temperature to 72 which is what I really need it at. 72 is just right for me but when others are at the office I have to keep it at a temperature that we all can live with. At night in bed I go thought this I am too hot and sweet then I am two cold. I just I can just lay in bed do nothing and sweat.

I know how you feel I've suffered from excessive random sweating for 5 years now.It can be really embarassing at times and gets me quite depressed. Winter or Summer it doesn't matter it's only the severity that alters. I sweat all over especially from my head and face I 'm like a waterfall. If you haven't seen your doctor about it please do as there are a couple of really serious conditions that have similar symptoms so they need to be ruled out. I have repeatededly asked over the years if it could be the MS and been told "I don't think so, I'm not sure, It's unlikely" these answers are not what you expect from a " specialist" MS service. It can be quite disheartening. However Isaw a new MS consultant this week and at last finally an answer he has confirmed it is one of the "uncommon" symptoms of MS and it's due to brain stem lesions.
I have tried everything from medication to diet and nothing has reduced the sweating but I feel better knowing why it's happening and I'll just have to live with it.
