If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

A blood test for MS already available

Post by frodo »

It seems that these people have been working on this for several years. This is not a project. It is an already available test. If you are a clinic you can buy it here: https://www.iquitylabs.com/lab-login/

They say that its performance has been confirmed under supervision by a third party (http://patientactivationnetwork.com/wp- ... iew_MS.pdf):

"In late 2015, IQuity contracted a validation of its assay system with an independent CAP-accredited, CLIA-certified
lab. This validation process included evaluation of the gene targets used and clinical validation of blood samples from
healthy subjects and MS patients through a process that was managed entirely by the independent lab. IQuity
successfully replicated its research findings in their lab confirming the accuracy of the IsolateMS test panel"

They claim to have specificity of 98% and sensibility of 92% when tried on already diagnosed people vs. healthy controls. They also claim to have a 95% of sensibility on CIS people that later converts to MS.

They based their RNA test in this paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23748426

New Blood Test Could Diagnose MS in One Week

Imagine a blood test that could allow a medical professional to diagnose multiple sclerosis (MS) within just seven days. Today, a diagnosis can take months or even years to confirm. IQuity, a start-up company based in Tennessee, plans to launch such a test in May. They claim it has a 90 percent success rate in detecting MS.

Currently, diagnosing MS is accomplished taking a detailed medical history and through tests such as a magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the brain and/or spinal cord and the process of elimination for other illnesses.

Due to the disease’s ability to mimic symptoms of other illnesses, and because no two people present MS symptoms exactly the same, the diagnosis process can sometimes be a guessing game.

Bruce Bebo, executive vice president of research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, leads the organization’s team, whose goal is to invest the agency’s resources in the most impactful way.

The blood test works by detecting patterns in RNA. RNA-based research in 2013 successfully identified profiles in people with MS. Once the profile was identified, an algorithm was created to find a pattern of molecules specific to diseases like MS. It’s this proprietary algorithm that lead to $4 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as significant private investment for IQuity’s blood test.
Edit: By the way, RNA testing is not the only test available. Also ELISA/NFL tests are commercially available. For example:
