I follow a gluten free diet and avoid pretty much all grains for this reason alone. But the extensive use of pesticides required to grow and deliver grains in good condition is yet another good reason to avoid them and why I don't consume even gluten free grains like buckwheat, quinoa, oats and rices to name just a few. (Just think about what grain and similar products would look like when you opened the package at home without the use of pesticides. - yuk!)

The use of Glyphosate is widespread. It is used to desiccate (to remove the moisture of the food being treated typically in order to preserve the food item being treated) a wide range of other crops including lentils, peas, non-GMO soybeans, corn, flax, rye, triticale, buckwheat, millet, canola, sugar beets and potatoes.

There is a lot of disturbing information related to this topic on the web and it is worth looking into if you are concerned about pesticide contamination of your fruits and vegetables.

I eat organically grown brown rice. Costco sells it inexpensively in 12 lb. bags. Oh, and there are no bugs.

It's a bit ironic that the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for glyphosate indicates that it shouldn't be released into the environment.

Organic products are not immune to pest issues. Pesticides are definitely used for organic foods during the growing process legally, just not synthetic pesticides. But cross contamination is common, very, very common (apparently over 80% of the U.S. food supply now reportedly contaminated with glyphosate). While organic foods may not be treated with glyphosate directly, they are exposed to it and are likely treated with something 'legal' just prior to harvesting.

There is just no way to avoid pesticides in our foods (a necessary evil) unless you grow your own indoors.
