Death of Montreal man may be assisted suicide

Police in Montreal are investigating whether the death of a 36-year-old man is a case of assisted suicide.

The man's 59-year-old mother has been arrested and will appear in court this afternoon.

The man reportedly had multiple sclerosis. He was found dead at his home Saturday night, after his mother called 911.

When police arrived, the woman allegedly told them she had helped her son take his life, police spokesman Miguel Alston told CTV affiliate CFCF News.

The mother was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Police cannot confirm the cause of death, but they say the body had no external injuries. An autopsy will be performed to determine how the man died.

CFCF reporter Rob Lurie said the man, who worked in the health sector as an orderly, had been suffering from MS for some time.

Lurie spoke with the man's ex-girlfriend, Dulcinea Langfelder. The man contacted his ex last May, and said he wanted to see her for the very last time.

Langfelder said that when she met with him, she said to him: "Well from the tone of your email, either you're going to leave town and start your life anew, or commit suicide.

"He said, 'Maybe a little bit of both'."

He then told her he had MS. "At the time he seemed okay, until he got up to walk. He could barely walk," she said.

The man's mother is facing two possible charges -- premeditated murder or a charge under Section 241 of the Criminal Code that makes it illegal to aid and abet in a suicide.
