Post by RuSmolikova »

MS patients on Tysabri: 170 PML cases, 33 deaths already (as of 4-th of October 2011).
"...as of the end of September 2011 approximately 63,500 patients were on commercial and clinical TYSABRI therapy worldwide. And that cumulatively approximately 92,200 patients have ever been treated with TYSABRI in the post-marketing setting," said Biogen Idec.

This link will give you some numbers as of Sept 16. Obtaining a number of patients currently on the medication is kind of difficult since it changes constantly as people stop using the drug and others start.

from link
There are about 46,000 people on Tysabri in the US
and that was 9/16

I'm thinking 33% over 46k doesn't seem horrible. But I won't deny that on some level the PML thing gives me pause.

Biogen Idec announced today:

Which means 31% of those who have tried the drug have discontinued it for various reasons. For a medication that Biogen told us from clinical trials, there was a 67% reduced risk of relapse...hmmm.
