A mutation increases 70% the risk of multiple sclerosis!

Post by ton »

This is the first genetic alteration associated with less frequent familial cases.

A mutation in the gene NR1H3 increases by 70% the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, as described today in Neuron by a team from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada).

Where does the article state that the gene NR1H3 increases by 70% the risk of developing MS?

Here is another articled about the research:

UBC scientists identify gene mutation linked to multiple sclerosis:

Interestingly this article state "...only one in 1,000 MS patients have the mutation in their DNA...". I am not a researcher but obviously it must have significance to the researchers. Lets hope it leads to some positive results.

I think it was a misquote. What they say is that people with the mutation p.Arg415Gln in NR1H3 has 70% of chances to develop PPMS during their lives.
