Life-threatening vitamin D intoxication due to intake of ultra-high doses in multiple sclerosis: A note of caution
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30358476

Abstract
Knowledge about complications of chronic ultra-high dose vitamin D supplementation is limited. We report a patient with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) who presented with generalized weakness caused by hypercalcemia after uncontrolled intake of more than 50,000 IU of cholecalciferol per day over several months. Various treatment strategies were required to achieve normocalcemia. However, renal function improved only partly and further progression of MS was observed. We conclude that patients need to be informed about the risks of uncontrolled vitamin D intake and neurologists need to be alert of biochemical alterations and symptoms of vitamin D toxicity.

Taking higher than normal doses of Vitamin D is typically safe IF you take some simple precautions and do frequent blood work to monitor your progress.

Of course, the best/safest choice is to work with a doctor who has expertise in this matter.

I'm not a doctor, but I've done a tremendous amount of research on this, since my wife is being treated for MS with 70,000 IU of vitamin D daily under the care of Dr Holick at Boston Medical Center. Dr Holick is considered one of the medical world's leading experts on all things vitamin D, and has met with Dr Coimbra in Brazil many times. Yes, doses over approx 15,000 a day without a doctor's supervision is very risky - BUT there are literally tens of thousands of people worldwide on the high dose regimen (>15,000 daily) for MS and other autoimmune conditions under their doctors care. The two of most important parts of the regimen are 2.5 liters of fluid a day, and severe restriction of calcium.
