Zinc and Albumin

Post by jimmylegs »

not sure i'm on board with 'low albumin causes low zinc' idea...

Zinc Burden Evokes Copper Deficiency in the Hypoalbuminemic Hemodialysis Patients (2020)
https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/12/2/577
"... Since albumin binds to zinc as a carrier, low zinc levels could be attributed to lower level of serum albumin..."

The effect of severe zinc deficiency on serum levels of albumin, transferrin, and prealbumin in man (1981)
https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article-a ... 55/4693392
"...Concentrations of all three serum proteins were significantly depressed in zinc-deficient patients compared to healthy controls, and levels of all three proteins improved or corrected with a short period of zinc supplementation as the sole form of therapeutic intervention. Prealbumin levels dropped and corrected most rapidly, probably due in part to its short half-life of 2 days. This study demonstrates that zinc plays an important role in protein metabolism in man and is necessary for the maintenance of normal levels of certain transport proteins...

Results
Serum zinc

Compared to the zinc levels of the controls (93 ± 6 μg/dl), the patients with acrodermatitis had a significantly depressed mean serum zinc concentration of 21.6 ± 2.4 μg/dl, (p < 0.001). This level increased to 63 ± 8 μg/dl after zinc therapy (Table 2).
Serum albumin
Zinc-deficient patients had significantly depressed albumin concentrations of 3.23 ± 0.27 g/dl before zinc supplementation (p < 0.001). This mean increased to 3.95 ± 0.71 g/dl after zinc supplementation and was not statistically different from the control group (4.02 ± 0.34 g/dl) (Table 2)."

Chapter 56 - Biomarkers of Blood–Brain Barrier Dysfunction (2019)
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 6552000566
"The BBB is formed of extremely tight junctions offering a wide range of functions, such as transendothelial transport systems, enzymes, and regulation of leukocyte permeation, which thereby generates the transport, enzymatic, and immune regulatory functions of the BBB."

The interaction of zinc and the blood-brain barrier under physiological and ischemic conditions (2019)
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 8X18305775
"Although zinc has long been regarded as important transmitters in central nervous system, the critical role of zinc dyshomeostasis in damage to the BBB has not been fully recognized..."

Albumin and multiple sclerosis (2016)
https://bmcneurol.biomedcentral.com/art ... 016-0564-9
"...Leakage of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a common pathological feature in multiple sclerosis (MS). Following a breach of the BBB, albumin, the most abundant protein in plasma, gains access to CNS tissue where it is exposed to an inflammatory milieu and tissue damage, e.g., demyelination."

Effects of acute exposure to aluminum on blood–brain barrier and the protection of zinc (2008)
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 4008011993
"...Compared with the aluminum-toxic groups, the permeability of BBB to Evans blue decreased (P < 0.01), the damage of the BBB ultrastructure was attenuated and the expression of F-actin and occludin increased (P < 0.05) in the aluminum–zinc group."
