Greetings from Europe and waiting for tovaxin to start there

Post by Jean »

Hi everybody and congratulations for this very interesting forum.

I'm french and my girlfriend was recently diagnosed with MS. (we're both 22) My whole world was crushed away in two weeks as many of our life projects were questioned because of MS.

I started searching the Internet all I could find about the disease, especially treatments, and I eventually heard about Tovaxin, which seems to me very promising. Unfortunately, we're french and there's no tovaxin trial planned in Europe.

I'd do anything to help her, and I'd like to know :
- when phase III trial will begin, and where (for instance there's phase III trial for FTY-120 in Europe) ;
- if it is possible to take part in something about tovaxin while not living in the US ;
- when do you exepct first results of phase IIb.

Thank you for your help

although still not in Europe, there is still the "T-Cell Vaccination (aka TCV-01-002) (Sheba Medical Center)" which is now in phase III trials, and based on similar technology (see http://www.thisisms.com/ftopicp-26898.html#26866) Its a little closer to France than america (i think isreal), and may actually be released before Tovaxin?

Hi Jean,

I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriend. I have had MS since I was 18 but I was diagnosed when I was 20 years old. I can relate to how getting this disease while still young can be particularly difficult (although getting this disease at any age is difficult!).

I am not sure if the phase III trial for Tovaxin will also be held in Europe. It might be too early to ask this question. Tim, who sometimes visits this site, might be better able to answer this question for you.

I can answer one of your questions. It is possible to participate in the clinical trial if you don't live in the United States. I am Canadian and Opexa allowed me to participate in the phase IIb trial for Tovaxin. The study coordinator just told me that I had to be 100% certain that I could attend all my study visits. I think you are more realistically asking if there is anything Tovaxin related that you can join in Europe. The phase IIb trial is only done in the United States. Let’s just hope that the phase III trial will also be held in Europe.

Hi Jean,

The former CEO of Opexa made trips to Germany and Australia making connections for futures sites. With Irun R. Cohen on the scientific advisory board, I assume Sheba in Israel would be a future site.

I would not look for any foreign sites until Tovaxin gets FDA approval. The main reason is money. The last finance round was done to have the money to run the current trial.

Opexa already has a vaccine for rheumatoid arthritis using the same principle as Tovaxin, but the most they might do with it will be a small phase I/II trial in Houston. They are also working on an adult stem cell to replace islet cells in type one diabetes.
Best regards, Tim

In 2001, my family helped fund the startup of Opexa. My father served on the Board of Directors of PharmaFrontiers, now Opexa Therapeutics, until the company completed a successful 23-million dollar financing round.

I will email him and see if I can get an answer. It may take a while to get a response.
Best regards, Tim
