Daisy – Participation in Dr. Wahls' phase 1 trial required an MS diagnosis of Secondary Progressive (SPMS) and the ability to ambulate 25 feet with or without assistive devices.

I do not know what the criteria for a phase 2 trial might be; I assume the criteria would be the same as for phase 1.

Liberation – I cannot answer your questions; you will have to contact Dr. Wahls for the answers.

Hello, everyone!

I was very impressed by Dr Wahl's recovery and I am planning on starting her diet. I would also like to do the neuromuscular stimulator she used. But I read she first used the 300 PV and then she switched to TDR68 in order to facilitate both the the number of minutes and muscle groups receiving NMES (http://www.thewahlsfoundation.com/wp-co ... Report.pdf). Does anyone know which of the two machines Dr Wahls recommends along with her diet?

I would appreciate any help!

Thank you all!

I have been following The Wahls Protocol since Feb/23/14 and am currently in weekly physiotherapy and just started E-Stim today and it just so happens the Rehab I am using uses the Empi 300 but had gotten another type in to try & for me to consider buying. I can't recall the name right now - but it turned out to be a lemon while the Empi 300 worked great. My quads required a 45 to attain the necessary stimulation but my lower legs only required 2.5 so this is very exciting.

My physio had gotten the price for the one that ended up being a lemon and it was only $130 - had it worked I wouldn't mind spending that $ but would always look online for a used 1 first. If Empi raised their prices after Dr. Wahls announced her use of it, it's not a huge surprise. Unfortunately many things are over priced as it is and when they see a marketing opportunity like that they're trying to live their American dream... Unfortunate for those of us who require those things but there may be other things just as good and I'd suggest asking an O/T or P/T to try different ones on you and see what you like best!

Good luck all

i never tried the emp machine, but after 9 months on her diet (not as strictly as she did it) i found absolutely no change in my overall health. no weight loss, no change in symptoms, etc. no sugar, no gluten, and no dairy is tough to pull off in family life, and getting all those greens into me got old really fast. but i stuck it out. i guess not everything works for everyone.

Zenhead, what exactly does your diet consist of? When you say "not as strictly as she did it", what exactly does that mean?

i started right in removing dairy, sugar and gluten, daily shakes of kale, mixed veggies/fruits (a full blender every morning), meats and fish as close as i could get to organic, wild-caught, grass fed. i stuck to the lists of accepted foods in her book. i ate that way, or as close as i could (there were a few situations where i couldn't easily avoid the no-nos) for 5 or 6 months, with absolutely no effect. since then, i've slacked off a bit (i eat whole grain bread every now and then, ice cream every now and then, like that.) the diet got very boring, as i am not able to shop for myself or really do much cooking. those morning shakes just started to make me gag. i don't know how wahls, as debilitated as she was, managed to keep so much fresh organic produce in her kitchen (a cook?). anyway, a combination of creeping laziness, boredom and lack of results has made it very hard to stick to such a strict diet. i still vastly restrict gluten, dairy and sugar, and try to eat as much variety of vegetables as i can, but being dependent on others to shop for me makes it very difficult.

I found out about Dr. Wahls originally from the company I buy my grass fed meats from (she left a testimonial there). In her original videos and interviews, she stressed grass fed meats. I just read her book a couple of months ago and was shocked that she recommended organic meats as well. Nutritionally, there is a big difference from 100% grass fed meats to organic meats, especially with regard to their fat content.

The diet is without a doubt a hard one, especially the final stage. But the payoffs can be tremendous. My suggestion is not to try her diet but to do it without modification. And when it comes to meats, only eat 100% grass fed meats, and stick to the fattier cuts. In fact, you really need to do all of her protocol because all the parts of it work together.

I have been eating grass fed meats (on a limited basis) since my diagnosis over 1 1/2 years ago. Although I just read her book in the last couple of months, I started a diet like she recommends on my own (actually recommended from the owner of the ranch I get my grass fed meats from) in June, eating ONLY 100% grass fed meats (and the fatty cuts), wild fish (salmon, tuna, sardines), deep greens such as kale, spinach, Chinese greens such as Chinese broccoli and wild seafood (lobster crab, shrimp). I also take many supplements (contrary to her recommendation) including numerous 'green' supplements such as Spirulina, Cholorella, and Vitamineral Green to name a few. I have given up all fruit except for berries such as raspberries, black berries, blueberries and strawberries. And that is it. It is indeed an extremely hard diet. BUT I feel great, many of my symptoms have finally improved/disappeared and I continue to improve rapidly as of late. My energy level is off the charts. I saw my doctor yesterday and I have lost 45lbs in the last 1 1/2 years. And the most amazing thing is that I eat a tremendous amount of food! As Dr. Wahls recommends, I only eat two meals a day and I am NEVER hungry. It is amazing.

Exercise is critical. As hard as it may be to exercise, you MUST. Do what you can today and challenge yourself to do more than today tomorrow. And do that each and every day.
