Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) say a small clinical trial of a progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment has been stopped early due to poor results. The trial was evaluating the drug Rituximab for its efficacy in depleting harmful immune cells and decreasing nerve damage in MS patients. The results were published in an article titled Insufficient Disease Inhibition By Intrathecal Rituximab In Progressive Multiple Sclerosis in the journal The Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology...Read more - http://www.ms-uk.org/MSnews

I was informed by one of my Neuro's that Rituximab and Ocrelizumab worked along the same lines, and was basically introduced as the first was running off patent. ie we could probably expect the same from Ocrelizumab in anything other than RRMS.

Another interpretation of the study's failure on the Bart's ms blog...

Csf cd20+ B cells were significantly depleted. However, at study dosing regimen, rituxan was unable to deplete B cells in cns tissue.

At best, rituxan will probably only ever be a very effective dampener of symptoms/obvious disease activity in those with reachable B cell camps in cns.
