Progressive MS trial of Rituximab is stopped

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) say a small clinical trial of a progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment has been stopped early due to poor results. The trial was evaluating the drug Rituximab for its efficacy in depleting harmful immune cells and decreasing nerve damage in MS patients. I was informed by one of my Neuro's that Rituximab and Ocrelizumab worked along the same lines, and was basically introduced as the first was running off patent. ie we could probably expect the same from Ocrelizumab in anything other than RRMS.

Csf cd20+ B cells were significantly depleted. However, at study dosing regimen, rituxan was unable to deplete B cells in cns tissue.
At best, rituxan will probably only ever be a very effective dampener of symptoms/obvious disease activity in those with reachable B cell camps in cns.
