Cost of Liberation procedure

Post by David1949 »

The cost of the Liberation procedure varies widely from one doctor to another. For people to make informed decisions when selecting a doctor they need to know the price. To that end I’ve started this post. I hope others will show the price they were given from whatever sources they have investigated. Please don’t use second hand information but only numbers you received directly from the doctor’s office. Also please provide only the total cost, not just the price your insurance did not cover. Lastly I think it’s still important that we protect the identities of the doctors since the anti-CCSVI crowd would like to put them all out of business. So don’t include the doctor’s name. Just provide enough info for us to get the idea, and also the approximate date when the price was given to you.

The office of the doctor in South Bend told me the cost would be $40,000. And they didn’t know if my insurance would cover any of it. I said no thanks. That price was given to me on 9/13/2010.

David, from Canada where we have no "insurance" so following is the cost we will be paying for my wife. We are going to Clinic of the Heart, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Excluding travel / stay: Imaging and Angio Treatment US $11,600.00
(Note if Stenting required, additional $3,000). If the imaging shows that patient does not have blockages, I believe "treatment" (imaging only) would then only (!) be $5,000.

We are booked to go to Cabo October 10/2010.

The website for the clinic in Arizona gives the following information re:CCSVI:

"The cash price for the diagnostic testing is $2,700. If your studies indicate venous abnormalities, a venogram with venous angioplasty will be offered at the cash price of $7,000. At the present time, insurance is not accepted for this program. We are happy to give you a statement which includes procedure and CPT codes for services rendered. You may use this to submit a claim to your insurance provider on your behalf to determine if you are eligible for reimbursement of any of your expenses. Any payment by insurance should be sent directly to you, the patient."

I clipped this from their website today 9/13/2010

By they way I suppose I should add a disclaimer here. I have no idea of the quality of the service provided by any of these medical providers. I created this post so that people considering the treatment would have some idea of the cost. The costs indicated are to the best of my knowledge correct, but they might give you different numbers. You should get firm prices from your chosen doctor before you make formal arrangements for the treatment. And of course the cost should be only one aspect of your decision making process. Furthermore there is no gauarantee that the Liberation treatment will improve your MS symptoms.

Whew! I think that covers it.

Does that include testing and angioplasty?

OK I just checked their website ( clinic in San Diego). It's $3500 for the testing plus $7500 for the procedure.

No treatment is available in Canada, but for screening: False Creek Surgical Centre in Vancouver, BC charged me $2350 for Doppler US + MRV (the price for DUS alone was $500, and cost for MRV was $1850). This was as of March, 2010.

My feeling is that it is a waste of money to do the screening, as most facilities that do the treatment will repeat the scans - at a cost. I only had the screening because I was told that I would be referred to an IR in Victoria - who was shut down before I could be treated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Treatment Centres;

Euromedic in Katowice, Poland = 6900 Euros (as of June 2010). This includes Doppler US, MRV, Catheter venography, 1 stent (if indicated) and 5 nights accommodation (breakfast included).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AMEDS Centrum in Warsaw, Poland =
CCSVI EXAMINATION (USG Doppler, MRV, neurologic examination, blood morphology) 1.390 EUR

CCSVI TREATMENT – BALOONING

(Venography rtg, balooning, 2 nights at the hospital, USG Doppler follow-up)
2.990 EUR

CCSVI TREATMENT – ONE STENT

(Venography rtg, one stent, 2 nights at the hospital, USG Doppler follow-up)
3.790 EUR

CCSVI TREATMENT – TWO STENTS

(Venography rtg, two stents, 2 nights at the hospital, USG Doppler follow-up)
4.490 EUR

Prices are exclusive of travelling and lodging costs.
(as of April, 2010)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Tariq Sinan (Kuwait/Egypt/Bahrain) =
Total cost of treatment, balloons, catheters and medications is 6000 $ US
. No mention of accommodation coverage. They will do DUS and MRV for $500 USD (as of May 2010)

Would it be possible for anyone posting to indicate whether they accept & file for insurance. That would be so helpful as many of us have to rely on insurance to help with the cost. Thanks. This is very helpful for those of us deciding where to go.

Rhode Island: $8000-$12,000 depending on number of angioplasties and stents required. They are working on a standardized price for self-payers.

Seattle: MVV $750. Venogram $5000 Angioplasty per visit $2000. Stent $1000 each.

Indiana: $40,000

Albany: Venogram $3000. Angioplasty $2000. Stent $2000 each.

Ontario: $1500-2000--but physicians are NOT legally permitted to do the procedure.

I was in Rhode Island this week: venogram 6500$ stent 1500$.
It was almost double the price in August but they were gracious enough to credit the difference. :)
