Balo concentric sclerosis linked to blood flow

A new interesting article linking blood flow and MS. In this case, the focus in Balo concenctic sclerosis. The article is this one:

In this article, the authors speak very little about RRMS but they say some interesting things:

Reduced blood flow in the white matter in MS

Of special pathogenetic significance for the relapsing–remitting MS, is the fact that even in apparently inconspicuous regions of the white matter (“normal appearing white matter”), a significant reduction of the blood circulation also exists. Microscopically, damage of the oligodendrocytes is apparent. These glial cells are responsible for the development of the myelin sheaths.

and the conclusion says

Conclusion:

A raised tissue pressure due to edema may be the cause for demyelinating lesions in the brain. The increased resorptive vascularization of the precursor lesions allows the nourishment of small tissue stripes by diffusion in the neighborhood. Also, sclerosing by glial fibers of older plaques promotes the blood circulation in the lesions and at their borders in cases of a raised tissue pressure.

Both theses of protecting mechanisms at the edges of demyelinated lesions support the assumption of a hypoxic causation principle of demyelinating lesions in Baló’s concentric sclerosis and multiple sclerosis.
