Does this sound like MS?

Post by sariberry »

I'm a 29 year old female and I've been dealing with issues for a few years now. To name a few:
chronic migraines
no headache free moments
numbness and tingling in extremities
brain fog
fatigue
dizziness
pain in left side of body (to the point of limping sometimes)
sense of blurriness in left eye, but my eye doctor says it doesn't exist

I've had multiple brain scans (and one spinal scan) that shows an unchanging lesion in my right temporal lobe. I'm told it is likely from a childhood injury I had. My spinal scan came back clear.

I had a lumbar puncture done a year and a half ago that showed 5 positive oglioclonal bands, but no elevation in protein levels.

I went to an MS specialist who thinks the o-bands could have been a fluke, but we haven't done another lumbar puncture to see if this is the case.

I'm feeling a little lost. I don't know who I should see or what the problem might be.

i would just say take a good hard look at the day to day and how to optimize. it's tough to get mainstream bloodwork to pick up on what are pretty much ubiquitous developed nation nutritional issues. either the tests aren't run as a matter of course, or a low normal level is taken as acceptable when it shouldn't be.

where issues are most likely to show up the most clearly, with things the way they are now, is with a detailed review by a pro of diet in comparison to guidelines for essential macro and micro nutrients. docs are not in the habit of referring to dietitians but anyone in public health, as opposed to clinical care, knows that joe public is not meeting their basic minimum nutritional requirements.

there is a huge gap between what people think is healthy, and what actually *is*. sometimes even the RDAs are a problem. and how we teach people to look after themselves isn't really working.

some questions for one essential nutrient of many to choose from:
do you know how many mgs per kg body weight you need each day for magnesium?
how does that number compare to the RDA for your gender and age group, is it in line, or off?
which are the most magnesium dense food sources in your daily routine?
can you describe which food servings contribute most to your daily dietary magnesium intake?
do you need to supplement to meet your daily requirement, or are you achieving at least the minimum via food and fluids?
when and if you choose a supplement, which forms are inferior or superior in your opinion?
how much of your daily mag intake can you expect to be contributed from water, based on the kind of water you use most often?
are you on any medications that interfere with magnesium status?
any other possible anti-nutrient factors in your typical day to day?
does your exercise routine generate increased magnesium demand?
does your lifestyle in general generate increased magnesium demand? stressful situations, injuries, etc?
have you ever had a serum magnesium test and if so is the result handy?
what is the difference between a serum and an RBC magnesium test?

i picked magnesium to go over first because of the chronic headache, even though mag is involved with hundreds of processes in your body. if everybody could readily answer all these questions for each essential nutrient, i think we'd be living in a completely different world :)
