Jimpsull, I seriously doubt there could be a patent infringement. Pharmaceutical grade Biotin is not a new compound.
What can be patented in the world of natural ingredients?

I would be more concerned about consuming all the fillers in the OTC Biotin in order to get to the high dosages used by MedDay. In my opinion, a reliable compounding pharmacy is the safer choice.

I agree with you in principal - though Med-Day has been granted a patent for use of 50 - 700 mg d-biotin for treatment of MS or stroke.

Yes, Jimpsull - but they are going for an FDA approval of a drug so it can be paid for by insurance. It is not going to take pharmaceutical grade Biotin off the supplement market
An example is Klor-Con ( potassium chloride) is just a timed release tablet in a higher dosage than OTC supplement. It is still potassium chloride and you still can get it at a compounding pharmacy or at your local drug store but not in a timed release tablet. 4AP is another example ---same dosage as Ampyra but Ampyra is timed release. Skips pharmacy continues to sell 4AP but he cannot sell a timed release tablet.
Just my thoughts...

Skip Lenz (Skips Pharmacy in Florida) a reliable compounding pharmacy used by many MSers for their LDN has just posted that he has sourced a supplier for the same Biotin used in the trial. He is getting a shipment in which he will assay test. Skip will be reporting back once he finishes his testing ... stay tuned :-)

Has anyone read the full study or knows anything specific which says the biotin in the trial was "slow release"? just being a devils advocate, but the biotin dose may be effective only as a single high dose.

Hi Cure,
The dosage in the Phase lll trial was a range of 100mg - 300 mg per day. Tablets were 100 mg. They were not time released. Biotin used was pharmaceutical grade which is not found in most OTC low dose Biotin. We should know a little more when MedDay reports in June at the European Academy of Neurology during one of the oral sessions.

Biotin is biotin. Pharmaceutical grade simply means the supplement must contain in excess of 99% of the ingredient stated. So the OTC Biotin has fillers which can vary from company to company. But OTC Biotin can probably be used to get the desired dosage by taking multiple pills. I have found one brand, NATROL, that seems to have less 'fillers' than many of the other brands.

I had posted this link in one of the other Biotin threads. This company seems to be a good source for bulk pharmaceutical grade Biotin:

I have settled on natures bounty. Key for me:

- "as d-biotin@ on the label
- doesn't contain calcium (20 - 40 x 66 - 220 mg is too much)
- $50 per month at 200 mg per day

I purchased a few packs of these, before I started to encapsulate my own; still have a few unopened. It did worry me that they had "Titanium Dioxide" which has murmurs of being a possible carcinogenic. 220mg of calcium is nothing, most calcium supplements contain 600mg+?

I have done home made capsules before and had all the stuff apart from the Biotin itself. Not having to swallow 30 capsules a day is a relief.

When buying the biotin powder in bulk, why the need to put the biotin into capsules? After measuring out a dose, couldn't the biotin powder just be dissolved in water and swallowed, or sprinkled on food and eaten?

A few updates on Biotin:

Skip's Pharmacy - Florida is now shipping Biotin in 100 mg capsules http://www.skipspharmacy.com/

MedDay has shared the supplier they used in the trial (MD1003=Biotin). As noted you may contact the supplier directly.
