new medical entity set appart from MS: Anti-MOG

Post by frodo »

First it was Neuromyelitis Optica. It was set appart from MS when anti-AQP4 antibodies were found to be specific of this kind of disease.

Then it came "anti-MOG associated encephalomyelitis". It was found that only very atypical MS could present anti-MOG antibodies, and now it is considered a separate disease.

And it has happened again. Around 2% of MS patients have auto-antibodies against a specific protein named flotillin. It seems that anti-flotilin patients will make a new different group.

NOTE: Before publshing the article, it seems that they presented a "poster" in Neurology April 18, 2017 vol. 88 no. 16 Supplement P1.393, available at

Update

It seems that anyway MOGAD and MS are not mutually exclusive and can overlap

Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein-Immunoglobulin G in the CSF

Discussion

CSF MOG-IgG is found in IDD other than MS and also in MS. In IDD other than MS, the CSF MOG-IgG positivity can support the diagnosis of MOGAD. The synthesis of MOG-IgG in the CNS of patients with MOGAD can be detected from the onset of the disease and is associated with the severity of the disease.
