Imaging biomarkers. Chemical composition by MRS as biomarker

MRS (Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy) can show the chemical composition of the brain. It seems that some chemical markers (the relationship of N-acetyl-aspartate to choline) can diagnose MS before the first lesion appears.

• MRI can identify MS plaques, but its detection of imperceptible disease related abnormalities in normal appearing cervical spinal cord is limited.
• MRS identifies tissue pathologic alterations even before the emergence of plaques in conventional MRI images.
• Reduced tNAA and increased M-Ins are important, sensitive indices for differentiating MS patients from healthy controls.
