Findings that remyelination protects axons from degeneration in animal models of multiple sclerosis (MS) have been replicated in humans in a study published in the European Journal of Neurology.
PET and MRI were used to monitor demyelination and remyelination in white matter lesions in 19 people with MS over a 4-month period.
A higher index of remyelination was associated with greater preservation of the microstructure of surrounding tissue, indicating reduced neuroaxonal damage.
