Researchers publish results which may settle MS debate

In an effort to develop therapeutic remedies for multiple sclerosis, scientists debate two possible interventional approaches – but they’re on opposite sides of the spectrum. Researchers at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, however, have reached a definitive conclusion as to which approach is correct, putting an end to a long-disputed issue.

Harley Tse, Ph.D., associate professor of immunology and microbiology at WSU’s School of Medicine and resident of West Bloomfield, Mich., whose study was published in the January 2011 edition of the Journal of Neuroimmunology, found that targeting white blood cells of the immune system known as T cells is the effective approach to block the disease in an animal model of MS, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.... Why do they continue to define therapy based on an outdated model like EAE? A search for PubMed finds that we've been able to suppress EAE in mice for a very long time, yet the current MS/human therapies don't come close to the success rate of EAE/mouse therapies. It seems that until we find an equally cheap and easy model of MS, researchers will continue to rely on this inaccurate one.

I bet that poor MS mouse is absolutely ecstatic to read this report!

Just do a search on Google for Wayne State's and Dr. Khan's (main doc) involvement with the pharmaceutical industry and it's no surprise that we see a report like this. Wayne State was also involved in a damning report on CCSVI when it first came out. Some things never change!
