Massive study disputes Zamboni theory of multiple sclerosis

Post by scorpion »

The study identified more than two dozen new genetic variants common to people with MS and found the majority of genes involved are pivotal to the immune system.
David Hafler, professor and chair of the neurology department at the Yale School of Medicine, said it’s “shameful” so much attention and investment is being placed on an idea that is simply not true in light of findings about the immunological roots of the disease.

“We now know the cause of MS. It’s no longer a mystery,” said Dr. Hafler, who was involved with the new study.
He also hopes the new research can help quell “hysteria” surrounding the theory MS is caused by blocked neck veins.
Fat chance!

Well, this is a bit strange to say 'we now know the cause of MS'....is he the only one that 'now' knows? because it does not seem like anyone else knows what 'causes' MS or perhaps science would have found a cure a long time ago.

And what does cause MS? by the way?

Do you have a link to the study itself, scorpion?

I am curious if they were looking at all genes (which would be a lot....) or primarily immune-related genes or how it was determined what to look at.

Remember too that CCSVI theory can dovetail with the autoimmune theory of MS. CCSVI-related hemodynamics can weaken the blood brain barrier which then allows leukocytes to cross. I would argue that CCSVI-related hypoxia also kills oligodendrocytes, which weakens myelin; that the hypoxia and lack of nourishment damages the gray matter; and that diminished capacity to remove waste results in further damage. But having leukocytes with a specific genetic tendency toward autoimmunity present in that ailing brain environment would not help the situation.

With ischemia, when people have the secondary immune response (that worsens the initial damage), there would be variability in people's immune systems and therefore variability in that secondary immune response. You might be able to study why genetically some people would have a more extreme immune reaction. But the ischemia still came first.

Some genetics studies in support of CCSVI theory:

And where did they get their information that Zamboni or anyone says that blocked veins are the 'cause' of MS....he has never said it, other scientists have never said it, WE here on Tims, those of us who are open to exploring the idea that CCSVI MAY BE associated with MS, have never said it!

Research points towards a combination and genetics and environment. There seems to be a belief that if we know the cause of MS scientists would quickly develop a cure which is not the case. Look at cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. We know generally what causes them but there are no cures.

Anything to get a headline!

So they discover new genes that finally unlock MS and bring clarity and in the same story admit that their " [MS] research has been plagued by the fact no one clearly understands what causes it and how it unfolds." Are they saying that soon they will have all the answers but won't know what to do with them? I'm so excited to hear this!

How much money did they spend to bring us this important info? It was clearly worth it because just reading this made me get up out of my wheelchair and sprint around the block!

Finally, we're on the verge of a CURE!!! (I think that's what I read - not quite sure, now...)

Who here thinks all MS is identical and every single case is induced by the same thing? MS is a catch-all label that means "we don't know what -- you have!"

The pro-CCSVI'ers and those treating CCSVI are talking about CCSVI-induced MS in theory. If you have been treated for CCSVI and nothing got better, then it was something else or more remains to be done!

These anti-CCSVI doctors and their trials need to figure out what those other things are and how to fix them. Do some "real science" instead of trying to obstruct other avenues of research.

Then I'll show you a headline

(i rant alot like this but always wimp out and never hit "Submit"! Guess I did this time!)

Recent reports have emerged suggesting that multiple sclerosis (MS) may be due to abnormal venous outflow from the central nervous system, termed Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI).

btw -this might be the study referenced in the article.

EDIT: nevermind, the newspaper article says the research will be published in Nature, and this ain't it. Jumped the gun. :)

first they say-
“We now know the cause of MS. It’s no longer a mystery,” said Dr. Hafler, who was involved with the new study.

then they say-
While no one knows what causes the disease, many in the scientific community say

so it will probabably led to another drug that they say will slow ms down, its not like their gonna find a cure.

ccsvi and Upper Cervical Care has made more headway in MS than drugs have in the last 100years. even though UCC has been around for 80 years, now its making its way to mainstream

There's a vaccination for HPV, which causes cervical cancer. That's one in which finding the cause meant finding the cure at least in terms of prevention. Likewise, treating CCSVI early may be a way to prevent MS. I think research points to MS being multifactorial. CCSVI being highly associated with MS would make it a significant one of those factors. And it is one that we can do something about.

Unfortunately, the bulk of the studies coming out now do not demonstrate an association with MS much less "highly" associated.

For some reason, Dr. Zamboni is standing alone in this regard. I would like to hear his explanation about this. On the basis of his study, many, many people underwent venoplasty after trusting his research which does not appear to be reproducible.

this is a story in a newspaper . Newspapers need interesting articles .... in order to SELL newspapers.

much better to get your MS information from those treating and then publishing .......

for now ...... just use this so-called news paper to wrap your fish .......

but I tip my hat to the editor ..... another 5k newspapers sold ?
