localized allergic reaction ?

Post by cervocuit »

As a reminder, Tracy Putnam has tested dogs with venular obstructions and found that it has produced lesions similar to MS. But his idea was about blood clotting disorder, not veins abnomalities.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article ... 9-0035.pdf
Kennedy, in 1936, directed attention to allergy as a possible basis in the etiologic delineation of multiple sclerosis. He stated: "Its episodes, its remissions, the curability of its most acute crisis, its attack on the optic nerves, its neglect of sensory paths-all these things greatly resemble the happenings of localized allergic edemas after the central nervous system has come under fire. Further, the recent plaques in the rare autopsies of acute cases are not sclerotic; they are infiltrations by fluid of the nerve tissue surrounding blood vessels."
That same year Putnam pointed to the essential similarity between encephalomyelitis and multiple sclerosis. In 1941 he expressed the view that the origin of encephalomyelitis is in some sense an allergic reaction, adding that « it seems not unreasonable to suppose that an instability of the clotting mechanism of the blood might be one aspect of allergy. »

This is the evolution of 22 MRI scans done by one patient in one year (it loops and starts when the line on the bootom right corner appears)

Thanks for the post, cervocuit. That's a "cine" from Harvard's "The Whole Brain Atlas" site, a link I send people to all the time to see the differences in brain appearance between different neurological conditions. And also to show them how quickly MS brain lesions can come and go. You can also look at still pictures of a brain MRi at different levels or "slices" there. It's a great site.

I have no comment on the allergic reaction thread title...not sure I understand.

But thanks for the link!
Dx'd with MS & HNPP (hereditary peripheral neuropathy) 7/03 but must have had MS for 30 yrs before that. I've never taken meds for MS except 1 yr experiment on LDN. (I found diet, exercise, sleep, humor, music help me the most.)

Hi euphoniaa,
Actually, I downloaded one of the slice in .mov file (where the most things happens) and converted it in .gif to put here.

Because loclized blood clotting due to allergy inside the brain is an other way to understand the blood flow problem than an extracranial vein blockages in considering that, as you say, MS brain lesions can quickly come and go.
