If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Sinus congestion, ear plugged, pressure in cheek

Post by katyb76 »

Does anybody else have these symptoms? My right ear has been plugged for almost 3 years, and my right cheek feels full, almost similiar to a sinus infection. If MS clogs jugulars, this would make a lot of sense, but why hasn't anyone tested me for CCSVI? My optic neuritis also coincidentally occured on the right, along with my numbness and tingling. Maybe I'm overanalyzing everything, but it seems to coincidental to not mean something, Just curious.

I do not think any MS specialist will ask to test you for CCSVI, you know that this is not the regular treatment for MS... Are you on any medication? Does the pressure come and go or is it just always there?

it's always there, I am on betaseron, was on avonex for 6 years, also on a ton of oral meds, it seems to get very irritating during allergy season, it just doesn't make sense that it can't be related because it messes with my right eye's vision as well.

maybe you do have allergies... have you tested for food allergies?
this sounds like nerve inflammation more than a CCSVI issue though...maybe if you try meds like neurotin or muscle relaxers it could help...

I developed plugged ears 2 months after I had ccsvi treatment. I painted the ceiling of our garage on scaffolding with my head tilted back for a whole day. I then started over the next month to feel my ears were a bit plugged and bothersome. They proceded to get worse month by month until I was grinding my teeth so bad I was having incredicble neck and jaw pain. Doctors saw fluid on my ear drum once in about 4 visits over my ears and told me it was viral. It has lasted now 15 months so I know it isn't viral. I have gotten back a lot of ms symptoms as the plugging got worse. My vision has even gotten worse. When I take an ativan it relaxes the muscles and my ears don't feel very plugged. I have gone for NUCCA treatment and hoping that will help. My IR looked at my MRV scans that I had previous to the CCSVI treatment and said that I have a compression on my C1. I think that I made that compression worse that day I painted the ceiling. I have also seen an ENT and he told me I was normal. Heat on my neck and jaw seems to help, massages on the shoulders really helps...anything that can relax the muscles which puts less pressure on that compressed vein. I have read a styloidecomy study which sounded very promising. Anyone else out there suffering from plugged ears? I believe they are plugged because of compressions on the C1! I can massage my head and sometimes I can feel fluid run in front of my ear. I am going to try cranialsacal (sp) therapy tomorrow. I have scheduled two massages per week for the next few weeks to see if that helps. I just about forgot to say that I had a dental splint custom made to correct my terrible overbite so that I did not clench or grind anymore. That did help with neck and shoulder pain I was having but not the ears. I still get jaw pain at the joint and I get head pressure so I think I have Intracranial Pressure from this compression. Probably in December or January I will go for another MRV to see what is going on. Anyone else out there with plugged ears?

For what it's worth, I kept getting antibiotic treatment for suspected recurring infections in my sinuses on the left side only. It had been happening for years. Then when I had my CCSVI venoplasty, my left jugular was 99% blocked. And now I don't get the one-sided sinus infections. I don't know if there's a direct connection because the internal jugulars drain the brain and the nose or sinuses should be drained venously by the facial vein or external jugulars. But if the facial veins or external jugulars are being used as collaterals for the internal jugulars, that could lead to venous congestion. I'm also healthier now and maybe that's keeping me able to fight off infection before it starts.

Something I posted on the other ms site: http://www.msworld.org/forum/showthread.php?t=123337

Since posting that and receiving sinus/septum/turbinate surgery, I no longer have sinus pressure nor headaches, and my sinuses seem to be draining well. Though, this probably doesn't work with everyone...

There have been many discussions on sinus problems. You may find information of interest in previous threads such as this one:

Dr Scott Rosa is doing a study.with CSF flow, using the upright Fonar MRI. So far he finds that MS patients have a buildup of CSF in the brain due to trauma and the atlas is out of alignment. The CSF leaks into the brain causing pressure.

I just read this article confirming my hypothesis of the "highly significant" correlation between sinus drainage, staph and neurodegeneration: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 4813000059

It's really interesting that you bring up a connection between ccsvi and unilateral sinus congestion. Anytime I am congested or have sinus problems it is always on my right side. Recently I had a very atypical sinus infection of my right sinus that included facial pain and swelling. I thought it was allergy-related too but my understanding of it is that colds, flus, and allergies will cause nasal congestion in both nostrils...because the same internal or environmental conditions are acting upon both sides equally. I have long had a suspicion about structural problems in my right sinus but now I'm wondering if venous drainage could play a part too. IMO, ccsvi is still too experimental and hasn't shown enough efficacy for me to consider it but it is certainly interesting.

This is interesting. Sinus surgery to alleviate chronic sinus infection is what led to my first MS attack. Although I did not know it was MS at the time. Two months after the surgery I had an MRI showing multiple lesions.........diagnosis of optic neuritis/MS. I have always wondered if I had not had the sinus surgery at that time, how long it may have been before I was diagnosed and what if any other symptoms would I have had. I had no other symptoms prior to the sinus surgery.

My nose is blocked all the time. It became unblocked after angio and AO adjustments. And when I restenosed and lost my adjustments my nose plugged up again.
