Mercury vs. Zinc

Post by PointsNorth »

I was getting unbridled help re: intestinal problems (IBD) when I started taking zinc thanks to a tip from jimmylegs. 1+ years of complete remission. Then around a year ago NOTHING. Horrible Year of Bowel problems has ensued.

I'm been tested for mercury and came across this piece (go towards bottom). I've been injecting massive amounts of cynocobalamin (B12) for years now and i think that a mercury preservative thimerasol in the cynocobalamin is the culprit. Stay tuned.

@CR. Crohn's Disease since 80's. Resection of terminal ileum '91. I then started taking B12 as the terminal ileum is where it is absorbed. Found that I needed more B12 after MS dx in '91.

Fascinating! I'm so geekily excited to hear about your mercury test results. What a bummer it would be if your b12 shots were causing problems rather than resolving them. Why they keep using thimerasol is beyond me. Also interesting that this is yet another thing that messes with our adrenals.

Have you ever tried taking modified citrus pectin? It was a Godsend for me when I was doing the antibiotic thing...it's a mild heavy metal chelator too. I stopped taking it when I stopped antibiotics but might have to dive back into my stash to see if it still helps somehow.

I'm tempted to send in a hair sample to the folks @ the link you posted too.

I think hair sample is in the cards for me too. In my lab tests I was low in Vit C so I'm taking Ascorbic form (gel in small packet).

Called local lab and they said it will take 2+ weeks (mercury). They said is not a common test . . I think she said they only do a couple a month.

You can get your geek on when I post my Organic Acid Test + much much more :o

So the mercury preservative in B12 (thimerasol) could be reducing/eliminating the vitamin (B12) itself!

http://www.whale.to/w/b12.html

P.S. I'm now on a methyl/hydroxycobalamin,5-MTHF injectable which is helpful for mercury elimination. I'm in detox .... MS symptoms are elevated especially numbness in hands - also a sign of mercury toxicity! I got big relief of MS symptoms after first injection but not since.

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is an FDA approved detox agent. There's quite a bit of info published on it in PubMed. Some folks use a protocol which alternates a DMSA dose with r-lipoic acid. Lipoic acid also has two thiol groups and it's thought to complement the action of DMSA.

The biggest soarce of mercury comes from the amalgam(mercury fillings) we have in our mouth. It is a constant exposure as was explained in Dr. OZ show. You can take all the zinc you want but as long as the mercury is occupying the receptor sites the zinc will not do any good. You must get the mercury out of your body and there are a number of detoxification plans out there. Many people get better when they figure it out.

Dr. Thomas Nissen explains how mercury replaces the necessary minerals that your body needs.. He says low body temperature is a sign of a mercury problem. There is an excellent video by University of Calgary explaining how the mercury does this.

THX for the links 2bike. I tested low for ferritin/probable iron deficiency - yet another mineral marginalized by Mercury.

Zinc has no chance. Molecular weight of 65 vs. Mercury's 200.

Got back Mercury serum of 7 nmo/L. Normal range is <26. I don't think serum Merc will accurately measure Hg in tissue/organs (brain). Back to Naturopath. Maybe straight to chelation DMSA.

Do not attempt to chelate mercury until you are familiar with the Andrew Cutler protocol. You might think there are lots of alternative sites out there that are all giving pretty much the same advice. Cutler, who himself was very badly damaged by mercury, is the world expert bar none. Never use DMSA, DMPS or lipoic acid, or any natural substances to chelate mercury such as cilantro or chlorella (or for any other purpose) until you fully understand the Cutler protocol. Do not chelate with the help of any health professional or doctor until you understand this protocol.

The Cutler protocol is based on the principle that as you chelate mercury from body fat (where most of it is stored and remains harmless) it is redistributed to organs and to the CNS unless you know exactly what you are doing. You should never, repeat NEVER use a substance that can chelate mercury from the brain and spine (i.e. a chelator that can cross the blood brain barrier such as lipoic acid or cilantro) until you have removed most of the mercury from the body fat and organs.

If you ignore this advice you will almost certainly end up making the problem worse, as i did for many years. Six 25mg capsules of DMSA at 25mg (taken at intervals of 3-4 hours day and night for 3 days followed by a rest period of several days) will remove approx. 1% of mercury per day.

How do I know 1%? - because Cutler is a biochemist who probably understands the science behind mercury better than anyone else in the world. Doctors simply read scientific reports and do not have the time or inclination to truly understand mercury.

I am currently on my fifth round of DMSA (3 days on 4 days off) and hoping, with the later addition of lipoic acid, to remove all mercury with 2 years.

Thx gbourg, my doc in this instance is a naturopath and he assures me he is quite mercury savvy. I'll mention to him what you have noted when I do DMPS tomorrow.

Thx, PN
